Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
This Saturday Rosehill Gardens will host a bumper nine-race program for Rosehill Guineas Day, the action getting underway with the final fillies’ Golden Slipper lead-up event, the 2012 Magic Night Stakes.
With a ballot exemption into the world’s richest juvenile’s race, the $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) at Rosehill Saturday week, Race 1 at the track this weekend is sure to be a hotly contested affair.
Due to jump at 12:10pm (NSW time), the $175,000 Group 2 Mondial Pink Diamond Magic Night Stakes (1200m) has drawn a final field of 14, Stuart Kendrick’s in-form Queensland raider Doubtfilly coming up trumps with barrier one.
Damien Oliver is engaged to ride the Not A Single Doubt filly from Mackay, purchased for just $17,500 by Kendrick and his fellow syndicate owners, for the first time in the Magic Night Stakes with Doubtfilly out for her fourth win on the trot.
“She’s only a very small filly so that is probably a reflection on how we got her a little bit cheaper,” Kendrick said.
“She’s exceeded our expectations.
“Obviously when you do buy them you’ve got your fingers crossed but she’s ended up a pretty good buy now.”
She was last seen running away to defeat the smart Snipzu by five and a half lengths in a lucrative $250,000 QTIS 600 Bonus Plate (1200m) at the Gold Coast, and will be out on Saturday looking to earn a late entry into the Golden Slipper 2012.
“Her win the other day was really impressive,” Kendrick added.
There are two other last-start winners engaged in this year’s Magic Night Stakes field with the Allan Denham-trained Ichihara and Anthony Cummings’ She’s A Fox, both undefeated to date, who have also drawn ideally with barriers four and three respectively.
Ichihara, to be ridden by Corey Brown replacing Brenton Avdulla for the first time, has won back-to-back races this month debuting at Wyong before their last-start victory over 1100m at Warwick Farm on March 10.
Fastnet Rock filly She’s A Fox, a full-sister to last Friday’s William Reid Stakes winner Foxwedge, caught the eye with her winning debut at Canterbury on March 16, the $600,000 yearling purchase currently a $31 chance through bookmaker.com.au for the Golden Slipper.
“She is in the top echelon of two-year-olds I have trained on potential, but she still has to do it,” Cummings said.
“She has shown us enough to think there is a very good future for her, even if she doesn’t run in the Slipper.
“I think she is better for that (first-up) experience and will be better again for Saturday’s experience going into the Slipper.
“She is still learning and improving all the time.”
Avdulla, meanwhile, is booked to ride the Grahame Begg-trained Kyria in the Magic Night from barrier 11 on Saturday the Encosta De Lago filly coming off an eye-catching third to Jade Marauder in the Group 3 Sweet Embrace Stakes (1200m) at Randwick.
Cummings has also accepted for Sweet Embrace Stakes fourth placegetter Agueda in Saturday’s clash, the improving General Nediym filly suffering an early blow coming up with gate 14 in the Magic Night Stakes barrier draw.
There is no shortage of promising two-year-olds in the Magic Night Stakes this year with other notable hopefuls including the Gerald Ryan-trained Cavalry Rose (barrier seven), Chris Waller’s Catkins (barrier 12), and the Gai Waterhouse-trained duo of Later Gator (barrier six) and Valerio (barrier 10).
More Than Ready filly Later Gator comes off a close third in the Listed Black Opal Stakes (1200m) in Canberra while Valerio finished a very good second in the Sweet Embrace following her Canterbury win on debut in February.
