Kiwi Stayers Headline N E Manion Cup 2012 Field

Two New Zealand geldings headline a 12-horse field of stayers that will contest the 2012 N E Manion Cup (2400m) at Rosehill Gardens this Saturday.

Their country of origin is not all Herculian Prince and Precedence have in common, with both having high profile Australian trainers and both set to carry the top weight of 58.5kg into Saturday’s Listed event.

Precedence is one the top chances in the N E Manion Cup

Trained by the well-know Gai Waterhouse, Herculian Prince will be looking to build on the form that saw him run second in his last start in the Randwick City Stakes.

He will have to overcome a wide barrier draw (10) but one thing that won’t be a problem is the distance.

The six-year-old has raced numerous times over 2400 metres and recorded victory once at the length.

Precedence is has received a far more favourable barrier draw (4) and the Bart Cummings trained horse is coming off a reasonable fourth-place effort in the Australian Cup.

The Australian Cup result was a promising sign for the six-year-old who had previously failed to impress in two other starts in 2012.

They are not the only international horses in the field with Sydney trainer Chris Waller entering Irish six-year-old Stand To Gain and British geldings Permit and Merchandise.

Stand To Gain won the Group 1 Sydney Cup last April but has failed to impress since then and will be looking to bounce back from a disastrous last-place finish in the Parramatta Cup.

Making his job more difficult on Saturday is his barrier draw after today receiving the second widest start of the field (11).

Five-year-old Permit has been in better form and backed up some promising early season races with a third-place effort behind Maules Creek and Herculian Prince in the Randwick City Stakes.

One of the local horses who may challenge the international chances in th2 N E Manion Cup is Gai Waterhouse trained mare Older Than Time.

The 2011 Melbourne Cup runner has been in promising form this year with consecutive third-place finishes in the Millie Fox Stakes and the Aspiration Quality.

The N E Manion Cup will run as the eighth race on an exciting Rosehill card that is highlighted by the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas.
