Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
A full field of three-year-olds has been accepted to contest the 2012 Rosehill Guineas this Saturday, a strong local contingent to be challenged by the presence of four New Zealand visitors.
Set to run as Rosehill Race 7 at 4:10pm (NSW time) as the flagship race on a bumper nine-event program, the $500,000 Group 1 Flinders Lane Rosehill Guineas (2000m) has drawn 18-starters plus two emergencies.
The top-rated runner among the Rosehill Guineas acceptances is Kiwi raider Sangster drawn in barrier seven with jockey Danny Nikolic engaged.
Winner of the Victoria Derby last spring the Trent Busuttin-trained son of Savabeel is three runs into their 2012 campaign.
After a disappointing first-up last in the Group 1 Waikato Draught Sprint (1400m) back home at Te Rapa they travelled down under for the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) where they managed to beat home just one rival when finishing 16 lengths away 15th to crack filly Mosheen.
They showed improvement last start, however, when crossing just a length away third to Highly Recommended in the Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes (2040m) at Moonee Valley on March 16.
Alister Clark Stakes winner Highly Recommended has also been accepted for the 2012 Rosehill Guineas on Saturday, Peter Moody’s Fastnet Rock colt drawn on inside of Sangster in gate six with Luke Nolen to ride.
Alister Clark runner-up Ethiopia is first emergency for the Rosehill Guineas field on Saturday.
While Sangster is tipped for a good run this weekend, the Kiwi all eyes will be on in the clash is Roger James’ brilliant filly Silent Achiever.
A daughter of O’Reilly out of Zabeel mare Winning Spree, Silent Achiever comes off four straight turf triumphs back home and is out to emulate the feat of fellow New Zealander Jimmy Choux who won the NZ Derby – Rosehill Guineas double last year.
Silent Achiever was ultra-impressive when putting two and a half lengths on Rock ‘n’ Pop in this year’s New Zealand Derby last start, but she and jockey Hugh Bowman will have work to do on Saturday after she came up with the disastrous gate 17 in the Rosehill Guineas barrier draw.
NZ Derby runner-up Rock ‘n’ Pop, a NZ$1 million yearling purchase, travels to Sydney on a plane tonight for the Rosehill Guineas, the Fastnet Rock colt coming up with barrier 10 for their Aussie debut.
The last of the New Zealand-trained hopefuls looking to steal the Rosehill Guineas from the locals on Saturday is then the Gary Hennessy-trained Ocean Park (barrier 11), former Melbourne Cup winning jockey Glen Boss booked to ride replacing Craig Williams who was aboard for their last-start eight in the Randwick Guineas.
Of the Australian-trained hopes the best look to be Randwick Guineas runner-up Said Com (barrier 20), Gai Waterhouse’s Randwick Guineas third placed Laser Hawk (barrier nine), the Anthony Cummings-trained Australian Guineas second placegetter Strike The Stars (barrier four) and Commands colt Ambidexter coming off a Randwick Guineas fourth.
Along with Ambidexter in gate eight, Peter Snowden has also accepted for his dual stakes winning Redoute’s Choice colt Galah and last year’s Victoria Derby runner-up Induna drawn in barriers two and three respectively.
Other notable Rosehill Guineas 2012 hopes include the Guy Walter-trained Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes winner Doctor Doom out wide in barrier 16 and Bede Murray’s Spring Champion runner-up Darci Be Good also drawing double digits with gate 15.
