Americain Tops 2012 Sydney Cup Weights & Odds

The premier staying event of the autumn is only a month away with the Sydney Cup 2012 to light up Royal Randwick on April 28, former Melbourne Cup winner Americain heading both the weights and early odds for the classic.

Americain has been allocated topweight with 60.5kg for the 2012 Sydney Cup next month

Of the 80 gallopers nominated for this year’s edition of the $500,000 Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m), the now David Hayes-trained Americain has been allocated the hefty 60.5kg topweight.

Winner of the 2010 Melbourne Cup over the same testing two-mile distance as the Sydney Cup, the previously French-trained champion debuted for Hayes on March 10 with an excellent first-up third behind Manighar and Southern Speed in the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m).

Despite their big Sydney Cup weight, Americain remains the favourite in the futures Sydney Cup odds at paying $5.

They are also the firm favourite at a quote of $2.50 to win their next major autumn assignment, the $2.25 million Group 1 The BMW (2400m) at Rosehill on April 7 where they are sure to relish the step-up in distance.

Following Americain in the Sydney Cup weights is their last-start conqueror, fellow European import Manighar with 58.5kg.

Manighar has been a true autumn star having joined Peter Moody’s Melbourne-based operation at the end of the spring, coming back this year to win three of their four starts.

Two of those three victories have been Group 1’s with Manaighar backing up from their close Australian Cup success to score a similarly narrow win in the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill last Saturday.

Manighar currently occupies the third line of Sydney Cup betting at paying $7.

Sandwiched in between Americain and Manighar in the Sydney Cup markets for 2012 is then Niwot at $6.50.

The Hawkes-trained Galileo seven-year-old, winner of the Group 3 The Lexus Stakes (2500m) at Flemington last Derby Day, was last seen finishing a good fourth to Manighar in the Ranvet Stakes and they are nicely weighted for the Sydney Cup with 54kg.

Lloyd Williams’ 2007 Melbourne Cup hero Efficient ($21 is the third heaviest weighted nominee for the Sydney Cup with 56.5kg, followed by last-start Adelaide Cup runner-up Drunken Sailor ($11 and Kiwi stayer Wall Street ($61 on 55.5kg.

Other notable chances above the 52kg minimum weight include Gai Waterhouse’s 2010 The Metropolitan winner Herculian Prince ($17, Bart Cummings’ German import Illo ($11 and Graeme Rogerson’s New Zealand mare Scarlett Lady all on 54kg.

Savabeel four-year-old Scarlett Lady, winner of the NZ Stakes at the start of the month, is also the only other Sydney Cup hope currently under double figures in the markets paying $9.

Reigning Sydney Cup winner Stand To Gain, meanwhile, has been allocated 52.5kg, one kilogram less than they carried to victory in the wet 12 months ago.
