2012 Weetwood Handicap Final Field & Barrier Draw

The latest black type to run in Queensland will be the Weetwood Handicap 2012 at Toowoomba Cushion Track on Thursday, the sprint showdown this year dedicated to former jockey Kristy Banks.

Banks fell from a horse at Clifford Park during December last year, the brave 26-year-old suffering horrific injuries that are likely to see her spend out her days in a wheelchair.

Dedicated to Banks, the $150,000 Listed Kristy Banks Weetwood Handicap (1200m) will run as Toowoomba Race 6 at 3:25pm (QLD time) on Thursday.

The 2012 Weetwood Handicap field has drawn a capacity 14 starters plus five emergencies, local horseman Tony Sears preparing to saddle up three of the top fancies in The Ringmaster, Haizum and first emergency Stop Lying.

Drawn just better than mid field in barrier seven with Paul Hammersley engaged, Clang four-year-old The Ringmaster comes off back-to-back Doomben wins the most recent of which was a big three length romp in the Coca Cola Handicap over 1010-metres.

Hammersley, aboard for The Ringmaster’s three most recent runs, rates the horse an excellent chance at Toowoomba where they haven’t raced since their blistering eight and a half length win there on debut back in January last year.

“He races well and lets down a lot better on the cushion track at Toowoomba than he does on the grass so he’s got a reasonable chance when he gets back on the cushion in the Weetwood,” Hammersley said.

Haizum is the second heaviest weighted hopeful in the race and will be ridden by Glen Colless on 57.5kg from a nice inside barrier three draw as they look to improve on their fourth to Lucky Leak in the Weetwood last year.

The Hayil six-year-old has been in good form this season with a first-up win at Eagle Farm on March 3 followed by a second to Border Rebel at the same track and distance (1000m) on March 17 from an awkward barrier 11 of 11 draw.

“Haizum is a very handy horse and he ran fourth in last year’s Weetwood and should have finished closer,” Sears said.

Zaha six-year-old Stop Lying, meanwhile, is also out for their third straight win having won their past two at Toowoomba.

Stop Lying didn’t fare as well in the Weetwood Handicap barrier draw as their two guaranteed starting stablemates coming up with the disastrous gate 18.

They still need one scratching as well to make the field as they just missed a spot in the starting line-up.

Sears has tried to win the Weetwood many times before, coming closest with Inzaman who finished a close second to mighty mare Seawinne in 1995.

Topping the Weetwood Handicap weights this year is the Robert Heathcote-trained Gundy Son with 59kg.

Due to be ridden by Damian Browne from barrier eight, the Falvelon six-year-old was well beaten first up last start at the Gold Coast on an unsuitably Heavy track.

Heathcote will also be represented in the race by Monashee Mountain gelding Mondean who will be ridden by apprentice jockey Timothy Bell from barrier 12.

Other notable Weetwood Handicap 2012 hopefuls include last year’s runner-up Craiglea Falcon, the Kelly Schweida-trained What Happenedhenry, Norm Hilton’s consistent Sequalo gelding Reilly Blue drawn in gate four with Chris Munce to ride, and the Tony Gollan-trained stakes winning mare Cariad.
