2012 Birthday Card Stakes Nominations

One of the six Group race features scheduled to run at Rosehill Gardens this Saturday will be the fillies and mares Birthday Card Stakes 2012, a quality list of 20 nominations taken for the event today.

Hurtle Myrtle

Myer Classic winner Hurtle Myrtle has been nominated for the 2012 Birthday Card Stakes at Rosehill on Saturday

The most notable nominee for this Saturday’s edition of the $125,000 Group 3 Birthday Card Stakes (1200m) is last year’s Myer Classic winner Hurtle Myrtle.

Matthew Smith’s Dane Shadow mare Hurtle Myrtle broke her Group 1 status last Victoria Derby Day at Flemington during the Melbourne Cup Carnival when she claimed an upset win over Sacred Choice in the Myer Classic (1600m).

She resumed last Saturday at Rosehill and finished a credible ninth beaten three and a half lengths by five-time Group 1 champion More Joyous in the Group 2 Canterbury Stakes (1300m), Smith considering running her on successive Saturday.

The two top-rated mares among the Birthday Card Stakes nominations are then Peter Moody-trained Curtana and Peter Snowden’s Kanzan.

Exceed And Excel four-year-old Curtana hasn’t been seen in the winners’ stall since May last year, Moody hoping for improvement after their solid fifth when beaten three lengths second-up in the Listed Winona Girl Handicap (1200m) at Randwick.

That run came just one after their seventh to Woorim in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m), Curtana coming within a length and a half of the winner.

Kanzan will be racing first-up in the Birthday Card Stakes 2012 if accepted, the Group 3 winning Commands five-year-old last seen racing at Randwick in mid-October.

Kris Lees’ Redoute’s Choice mare Zingaling won the Birthday Card Stakes first-up off a spell last year.

Snowden has also nominated for his always-consistent Domesday four-year-old Divorces who has plenty of Group race experience and up-and-coming Lonhro mare and Celts for Saturday.

Other notable chances include Anthony Cummings’ Wenona Girl fourth placegetter Gybe, the lightly-raced Fastnet Rock filly Halle Rocks who has won three of her four career starts to date, last year’s Birthday Card Stakes runner-up Ladys Angel and the Clarry Conners-trained Satin Shoes last seen running second in the Group 2 Centrebet Classic (1200m) at Morphettville on March 12.
