Bede Murray’s improving colt Darci Be Good is on track for a run in the 2012 Rosehill Guineas at Rosehill Gardens this Saturday following a good effort in the Randwick Guineas last start.
The Darci Brahma three-year-old, winner of the Group 3 Spring Stakes over the Newcastle mile last September, was one of 23 horses nominated for this year’s edition $500,000 Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m).
Nearly a Group 1 winner when beaten just a long neck by fellow Randwick Guineas nominee Doctor Doom in the Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Randwick last October, Darci Be Good has had three runs this year.
Their first was a disappointing 12th to Hot Snitzel in the unsuitably short Group 2 Royal Sovereign Stakes (1200m) followed by a only marginally better ninth to Mr Make Believe over 1500 metres at Rosehill when hampered by a Heavy (9) track.
Murray, however, saw enough in their most recent run when only two lengths away sixth to superstar filly Mosheen in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) on March 17 to suggest that Darci Be Good will be a competitive force when stepping up to the 2000-metres of the Rosehill Guineas this weekend.
“His first two runs were questionable to some but they never worried me,” Murray said.
“He produced what I expected him to in the Randwick Guineas and I think he’ll go on from there.”
Adding more credit to Darci Be Good’s Randwick Guineas finish was the fact they came from a horror barrier 13 (of 14) to swoop home and make up plenty of ground late.
“From the 16 (into 13 without emergencies) we had no alternative than to go back and I thought he did very well at the business end of the race,” Murray said.
“He’s going great.
“I’ve been building him towards the Derby.
“I haven’t expected much until this Saturday at Rosehill Gardens.
The $1.5 million Group 1 ATC Australian Derby (2400m) runs at Randwick on April 14 and is the big season aim for many of the Rosehill Guineas hopefuls.
Latest Australian Derby betting markets at bookmaker.com.au have Darci Be Good rated an $18 chance to hand Murray their second win following Universal Prince in 2001.
Murray has also won a NZ Derby with Coniston Bluebird (2009) and the Queensland Derby with Half Hennessy (2003).
The 2012 Rosehill Guineas field, which is likely to feature last year’s Victoria Derby winner Sangster and last-start New Zealand Derby champion Silent Achiever, will be revealed on Wednesday.
