Sydney’s leading lady of racing Gai Waterhouse has high hopes that her progressive young gelding Laser Hawk can step up to the 2000-metres of Saturday’s Rosehill Guineas 2012 and break their Group 1 maiden at just start number five.
The Artie Schiller three-year-old won their opening three career starts, including a big one and a quarter length win over Said Com at Rosehill on February 15, before suffering their first loss on March 17.
Going up against a crack field for their first Group 1 test Laser Hawk was far from disgraced when finishing a half-length off the brilliant winner Mosheen, Said Com in second, in the Randwick Guineas (1600m).
Waterhouse has now nominated Laser Hawk for Saturday’s $500,000 Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m), the race attracting a total of 23 early entries, where they will come up against Randwick Guineas runner-up Said Com once again.
Laser Hawk’s effort in the Rosehill Guineas impressed Waterhouse as they were three wide without cover throughout, and she is confident they will improve and impress again on Saturday.
“That was his first try at Group 1 level and didn’t he do well because he had no luck at all,” she said.
“He will be better for that experience and I think the 2000 metres will suit him much better.
“I have said he is a Derby horse. He is still only lightly raced, and he is doing everything right going towards it. This is another step along that path.”
It is shaping up as a crack edition of the Rosehill Guineas this year with one of the big name entries being sharp Kiwi filly Silent Achiever out to emulate Jimmy Choux’s NZ Derby – Rosehill Guineas double win from last year.
Silent Achiever is also the $7 top elect in the Australian Derby betting markets at bookmaker.com.au, a price that will come right in should they salute on the weekend.
The 2012 Rosehill Guineas field and barriers are due out on Wednesday and will be published right here at Races.com.au.
