Todman Stakes 2012 – Pierro Looking Sharp for 2012 Golden Slipper

Odds-on favourite Pierro has proven himself once again as a genuine Golden Slipper 2012 contender by taking out the Group 2 2012 Todman Stakes today at Rosehill Gardens.

The exciting Gai Waterhouse trained colt continued his unbeaten career run when he beat Epaulette by a bob of the head in the 1200 metre Slipper lead up event.

A son of Lohnro, Pierro came out of the blocks nicely in third position and rider Nash Rawiller held him back superbly to sit a length or two behind the lead for the majority of the race.

As they came into the straight, Pierro was still two-lengths behind the lead but showed a good turn of pace in the final stretch.

The previously unbeaten Peter Snowden trained Epaulette overtook the favourite on the straight and pushed him all the way but Pierro showed his class by managing to just cross the line in front.

Prolific trainer Waterhouse said the “slipper fits” ahead of Australia’s prized race for two-year-old horses which will take place on April 7.

“He’s really everything you look for in a two-year-old, he can coast, he can take a sit as he did today,” she said.

“Then he can pick up the bit. He was beaten twice in the straight today…but he just said blast you get out of my way.”

Fresh off a winning ride on Fox Wedge in the William Reid Stakes last night, regular jockey Nash Rawiller was pleased with Pierro’s effort heading into the Golden Slipper.

“He sort of got himself ready for a bit of a dog fight. He just wants to win, it was a terrific effort,” Rawiller said.

“I couldn’t be happier going into the Slipper, he’s right on track.”

John O’Shea trained Golden Slipper hopeful Shelford finished third in his second ever start.
