Ofcourseican Wins Coolmore Classic 2012

Ofcourseican narrowly wins the Group 1 Coolmore Classic at Rosehill Gardens from Secret Admirer

Ron Quinton trained mare Ofcourseican has scored her first ever Group 1 victory by taking out the feature 2012 Coolmore Classic at Rosehill Gardens today.

The five-year-old battled hard to win the prized race for fillies and mares ahead of Secret Admirer and King’s Rose.

Heavily backed four-year-old Steps In Time lead for most of the race and as they came down the straight looked as if she may hold on for a remarkable victory.

Half way down the straight though, three horses picked up the pace almost simultaneously and Ofcourseican was ridden sensationally by young jockey Kathy O’Hara to just steal victory in front of Secret Admirer.

Trainer Quintion won the first ever Coolmore Classic as a jockey and was delighted to be involved with today’s victory, albeit in a different role.

“To train a winner of it is pretty special,” Quinton said.

He said was highly pleased with the victory for Ofcourseican who has been her own worst enemy at times throughout her career.

“She’s a wonderful [and] talented galloper,” Quinton said.

“She’s got the job done today which is great.”

The five-year-old came into the race in good form after winning the Liverpool Cup and now has eight wins from 26 outings.

Talented jockey Kathy O’Hara also experienced her first ever Group 1 and was ecstatic after the race.

“I’m just thrilled to bits to win this race,” O’Hara said.

She praised trainer Quinton who has provided her with plenty of advice in her career so far.

“He’s just great to ride for. You go out there and he fills you with confidence,” she said.

“He doesn’t over instruct you and he’s got plenty of faith in his riders.”

Much-hyped pre-race favourite Steps In Time finished in eighth place.

The Coolmore Classic may now be over but there is still racing to come at Rosehill today with the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes.
