Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
More Joyous has justified her odds-on favouritism in today’s 2012 Canterbury Stakes by taking top honours ahead of Monton and Metal Bender.
The classy Gai Waterhouse trained five-year-old added the $175,000 Group 2 win to her highly impressive resume which now stands at 16 wins from 23 starts.
It was the first run for the glamour mare since last October but she demonstrated why she is a five-time Group 1 winner, proving a class above her rivals.
The More Than Ready mare came out of the blocks quickly and managed to sit towards the front half of the pack for the entire 1300 metres.
As they came into the final bend, it was promising New Zealand gelding Somepin Anypin who had a two and a half length lead, but More Joyous was far too strong down the straight and eventually went on to win by a length.
Prolific trainer Gai Waterhouse was full of praise for the champion mare, describing her as “courageous.”
“I didn’t think she was going to win at the top of the straight,” Waterhouse said.
“She took a stride or two where she seemed to be sort of really trying hard. Then she just went boom, she sort of said I will not be beaten.
“That heart you can’t buy, it’s just fantastic.”
Nash Rawiller continued his stellar riding form after winning on Foxwedge in the William Reid Stakes last night and then the Todman Stakes on Pierro this morning at Rosehill.
Rawiller said he was impressed with how More Joyous dug deep in the final stages despite not being at her best.
“Just leading into the race, she [Waterhouse] said she’s not 100 percent fit this horse,”
“I took that on board and just rode her like the best horse and she did the rest.
“The last 50 or 100 [metres] was hard work and she just kept lifting.”
The experienced jockey said More Joyous was a courageous mare with a “heart as big as herself.”
“I love her,” Rawiller said.
