Ladys Angel Out for Coolmore Classic 2012 Upset

Joe Pride’s consistent mare Ladys Angel faces some of the best of her type getting around in the 2012 Coolmore Classic on Saturday, but the Sydney horseman hopes she will still be competitive in the Rosehill clash.

The Arena five-year-old goes into the $600,000 Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1600m), running as Rosehill Race 7 at 4:10pm, third up for the season and will be out to improve on those recent runs here.

Lightly raced for her age having had just 15 career starts for five wins and five minor placings, Ladys Angel resumed with an eye catching first up fifth when beaten a length and three quarters by fellow Coolmore Classic hopeful Steps In Time in the Group 2 NSW Thoroughbred Breeders Classic (1200m) at Warwick Farm on February 18.

She then ran third, beaten by the winner Steps In Time again this time by six lengths, in the Listed Wiggle Stakes (1400m) a fortnight ago.

While Coolmore Classic odds at bookmaker.com.au are led by Group 1 winner Streama at $3.50, Steps In Time is the $4.40 second elect.

Further down the Coolmore Classic betting markets is then Ladys Angel who is a double figure outsider at $26, nice odds according to Pride.

“This is her opportunity,” Pride said.

While hopeful of a good performance, Pride does hold some concerns over Ladys Angel’s wide barrier 11 draw which is looking less and less like holding any kind of advantage with the Rosehill track upgraded to a Slow (6) on Friday morning and expected to dry further.

“She is a very good wet tracker and hasn’t had conditions to suit yet,” Pride said.

“It’s her third run back and she is primed for Saturday and she is going to need to be.

“I believe she has got the ability to figure in a race like that.

“She will go forward from that barrier and make her own luck.”

The barrier might not be right but Pride is pleased with the stakes winner receiving the 52kg minimum for the Coolmore, the favourite Streama giving her a full three kilos.

“She could have done with an extra favour,” he said in regards to the gate.

“She is well weighted though.

“She meets Secret Admirer (58kg topweight) three or four kilos better than last start.”
