Extra Zero Takes 2012 Albury Cup

Top weight Extra Zero has gone one better than last year by producing a stellar effort to win the Listed $170,000 2012 Albury Cup (2000m) today.

The David Hayes trained five-year-old finished runner-up in 2011 and overcame some difficult obstacles to take top honours this year.

Carrying the top weight of 58kg, the gelding’s job was made even tougher during the week when he drew the widest barrier of the field.

Experienced jockey Nash Rawiller rode him sensationally and crossed from the outside to take the lead early in the race.

Extra Zero then produced a courageous display to lead for the majority of the race which is no small feat over the stayer’s distance of 2000 metres.

Muirfield (second) and King Diamond (third) pushed hard down the final straight but Extra Zero was too strong and managed to hold on for a one-length victory.

The $8.50 bookmaker.com.au chance was not given much attention by the punters pre-race who favoured Muirfield and the two race favourites Under The Hat (sixth) and World Wide (fourth).

Today’s Albury cup victory was Extra Zero’s first win of 2012 and the gelding now has four wins from 35 outings.

With the Albury Cup now over, attention turns to metropolitan racing with the William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley tonight and Coolmore Classic Day tomorrow at Rosehill.

The very best odds for all the racing at both venues can be found at the Races.com.au preferred bookmaker – bookmaker.com.au.
