The 2012 Phar Lap Stakes stands as the eighth race on an action-packed Rosehill Gardens card tomorrow and will see a quality field of 11 horses tested over 1500 metres.
With prize money of $1750,000, the Group 2 event serves its place as a key support race to the Group 1 Coolmore Classic and Ranvet Stakes at one of Australia’s finest racecourses.
The bookmaker.com.au betting market remains open for the Phar Lap Stakes with a total of five horses currently sitting at under $10.00 and four of those between $5.00 and $10.00.
The Races.com.au think tank has analysed the betting markets as well as the form to bring you our exclusive tips ahead of the Phar Lap Stakes.
While most of the hype ahead of this race has been for Hobartville Stakes winner and race-favourite Wild And Proud, the Races.com.au team refuses to get caught up and is instead backing Rekindled Alliance ($6.00 – bookmaker.com.au) to take top honours.
The promising Paul Messara trained colt was scratched last weekend due to wet weather but with a firming Rosehill track he will be looking to get his Autumn campaign back on track ahead of April’s Australian Derby.
He will be ridden by the experienced Corey Brown and the jockey said earlier this week he was excited to be riding Rekindled Alliance who will benefit from a dry track.
“I love the horse,” he said.
“I just hope it isn’t too wet. He just can’t acclerate on it the same way he does on top of the ground.”
Despite finishing a disappointing tenth when running out of steam at the back of the straight in last weekend’s Randwick Guineas, Wild And Proud ($4.20) should have enough quality to finish near the front tomorrow.
Prior to last weekend, the Gai Waterhouse trained gelding had two consecutive victories including the Hobartville Stakes which was won when a protest against Manawanui was upheld.
That’s The One ($5.00) is the other Races.com.au pick to feature in the placings in the Phar Lap Stakes and is coming into the race in good form.
The gelding won the CS Hayes Stakes at Flemington in February before finishing a respecatable fourth in the Australian Guineas.
Peter Snowden trained colt Benfica is the Races.com.au roughie for the Phar Lap Stakes and is currently paying $15.00 at bookmaker.com.au.
A son of Lohnro, Benfica will have to turn around some horrible 2012 form but is a talented horse with a Group 1 victory to his name.
