A high class field of 15 horses will line up in tomorrow’s 2012 Canterbury Stakes and included are an astonshing eight Group 1 winners.
Headlining the list is Gai Waterhouse trained champion More Joyous who will be resuming from a spell in the $175,000 Group 2 event.
The classy mare is a short-priced $2.60 favourite (bookmaker.com.au) to add the Canterbury Stakes to a highly impressive resume of 15 wins from 22 starts that includes five Group 1 victories.
Last year’s Myer Classic winner Hurtle Myrtle and two-time Group 1 winning gelding Sincero will also be running first up in what is set to be an exciting 1300 metre race.
One horse that will be looking to show he can match it with the big boys is the returning Ron Quinton trained gelding Monton.
Trainer Quinton said it was time for the former Hobartville Stakes winner to step up and be tested against higher quality fields.
“Naturally he’s got to step up to tougher opposition from now on,” he said.
The five-year-old last ran in the Group 2 Inglis Villers Stakes in December where he produced an impressive victory from a wide barrier ahead of Kontiki Park and King Lionheart.
Quintion said Monton would go in to the race in top shape but admitted it would be tough to topple the high quality field.
“He’s as good as he can get but it is certainly a really tough race,” he said.
“There’s no question about that More Joyous is a class act.”
Other horses that Monton will have to beat include last year’s Emirates Stakes winner Albert The Fat and 2011 Randwick Guineas winner Ilovethiscity.
The Canterbury Stakes sits as a major support race on a bumper Rosehill card that includes Group 1 races the Coolmore Classic and the Ranvet Stakes.
Monton is currently sitting at $26.00 with the Races.com.au preferred bookmaker – bookmaker.com.au.
