Somepin Anypin Ready for 2012 Canterbury Stakes

Somepin Anypin trainer Gary Portelli is satisfied the promising gelding has overcome a wounded foot and will go into the Group 2 $175,000 2012 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) at full fitness.

The four-year-old stepped on a nail last weekend but after some heavy healing work and a solid gallop yesterday morning, the Portelli camp is confident no fitness has been lost ahead of Saturday’s race at Rosehill.

More Joyous

Somepin Anypin will have to upset More Joyous to win the Canterbury Stakes

“I was able to give him a good gallop over 1200 metres…which should have him pretty spot-on for Saturday,” Portelli said.

With injury concerns seemingly out of the way, the focus can turn to race day and overcoming the obstacle of a high class field that includes Gai Waterhouse trained mare More Joyous.

The five-year-old is the current $2.70 favourite at and will be tough to beat in her first race since October last year.

A five time Group 1 winner, the More Than Ready mare boasts a record of 15 wins from 22 starts and a prize pool of more than $2.3 million.

Portelli nominated More Joyous as the pick of the horses in a race that also includes Love Conquers All and the Chris Waller trained Albert The Fat.

“I think More Joyous is the quality weight-for-age horse in the race. I would think she’s going to be the one just peeling out as they straighten,” Portelli said.

“It’s a top race. We haven’t earned our stripes at this level at weight-for-age yet but I’m just hoping he can step up.”

Somepin Anypin currently sits as third favourite ($10.00) in the market behind More Joyous and Love Conquers All ($6.00).

The Canterbury Stakes is set to jump at 2:50pm (NSW time) and stands as the fifth race on an action-packed Saturday card at Rosehill Gardens.

The two feature races are the Coolmore Classic for fillies and mares and the Ranvet Stakes which will test some high class stayers over 2000 metres.
