Unbeaten Gai Waterhouse trained colt Pierro will start as odds-on favourite in the 2012 Todman Stakes which will take place at Rosehill Gardens this Saturday as a genuine Golden Slipper lead up event.
The Group 2 $300,000 sprint (1200m) gives a small but quality field of colts and geldings the chance to impress ahead of April’s prized race for two-year-old horses.
Unbeaten colt Pierro heads into the race as a deserving $1.90 favourite after showing impressive form in his two starts to date.
The son of Lohnro won on debut last December before producing a quality effort earlier this month to take the Silver Slipper Stakes by one length ahead of Hussousa.
After Pierro, it is a log jam in the betting markets for who is the next most likely to score victory in Sydney this weekend.
Unbeaten colt Epaulette and the John O’Shea trained Shelford both sit at $5.50 with the race still two days away.
Epaulette proved impressive on debut last December and beat a quality field of young horses in his first up effort this year in Canberra’s Black Opal Stakes.
Shelford was set to run last weekend but weather forced O’Shea to with draw the horse who managed second in his only start to date in February’s Canonbury Stakes.
Just behind those two in the betting are another O’Shea trained horse in Faustus ($6.00) and Magic Millions runner Amorino ($7.50).
Faustus has shown plenty of promise to date, backing up a debut win last November with a second-place finish behind Epaulette in the Black Opal Stakes.
Amorino may have finished sixth in the Magic Millions but prior to that the son of Snitzel produced two consecutive victories.
Rounding out the seven-horse Todman Stakes field are long-shot hopes Trophies ($61.00) and Red Excitement ($81.00) who finished last in the Black Opal Stakes.
Of the horses running in the Todman Stakes this Saturday, Pierro is the highest rated at $7.00 in the early bookmaker.com.au Golden Slipper market.
