While all the focus has been on the return of New Zealand mare More Joyous in the lead up to the Group 2 2012 Canterbury Stakes (1300m), local gelding Sincero will also be racing for the first time since being spelled last October.
The Stephen Farley trained four-year-old will be looking to put some early results on the board after a disappointing finish to last year’s Spring Campaign.
After starting his spring endeavour in sizzling form with two wins including the Group 1 George Main Stakes, the gelding could not manage better than fifth in four follow up starts.
Sincero currently sits as fourth favourite ($11.00) at bookmaker.com.au and trainer Farley is confident the two-time Group 1 winner will start well in his first-up hit out.
He said Sincero sprints well fresh but admitted five-time Group 1 winner More Joyous would be tough to beat on Saturday.
“More Joyous is definitely the horse to beat,” he said.
“But we’re up to the class now and you can’t dodge them.”
Farley said wet weather would decrease Sincero’s chances of first-up victory but he would be running regardless.
The track was today rated as heavy but fine weather is forecasted for the rest of the week which should see the track firm over the next couple of days.
Sincero has drawn barrier 11 for the sprint and will be aided by prolific Sydney jockey Hugh Bowman who returns to the gelding’s saddle in place of regular jockey Chris O’Brien.
The Gai Waterhouse trained More Joyous is currently a short-priced $2.70 favourite (bookmaker.com.au) to take top billings in the $175,000 event and is followed by Love Conquers All (6.50) and Somepin Anypin ($10.00).
The Canterbury Stakes is set to jump at 2:50pm (NSW time) and is the fifth race on the Rosehill Gardens card this Saturday.
It stands as a key support race on the eight-race card which features two Group 1 races and some important Golden Slipper lead up events.
The markets are now well and truly open for all the major racing at Rosehill this weekend and the best value odds can be found at bookmaker.com.au.
