Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Bart Cummings’ last start Kewney Stakes winner Empress Rock has been backed into the narrow favourite to take out the Moonee Valley Fillies Classic 2012 on William Reid Stakes Night this Saturday with Our Miss Jones hot on her heels.
There are 10 three-year-old fillies, many on the 2012 Australian Oaks trail, left in contention for the $200,000 Group 2 Fillies Classic (1600m) this year following the early scratching of #3 Assertive Eagle.
Out wide in barrier nine with Steven Arnold to ride is race favourite Empress Rock, the daughter of Fastnet Rock coming off a big one and a quarter length with over Assertive Eagle in the Group 2 Kewney Stakes (1400m) at Flemington a fortnight ago.
In the latest Moonee Valley Fillies Classic odds Empress Rock pays $3 and is the market mover having been backed in from $3.30 to win her first race over a mile.
Originally co-favourite with Empress Rock is the now $3.30 second pick Our Miss Jones, Michael Kent’s Darci Brahma filly drawn nicely in barrier three with champion hoop Craig Williams engaged.
Our Miss Jones resumed after a five month spell to finish a brave third behind Glows and Empress Rock in the Listed Typhoon Tracy Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on February 24 and comes into Friday night’s clash fresh and ready to break her maiden status at career start number five.
In a relatively open early Fillies Classic betting market two other hopefuls are under double figures with the consistent Peter Moody-trained Total Attraction ($5.50) and Flemington-based Twilighting ($9).
Nadeem filly Total Attraction boasts an impressive strike rate so far having saluted in her opening three career starts.
She suffered her first defeat last start, however, when Empress Rock beat her home by two and a half lengths in the Kewney Stakes, Total Attraction crossing fourth.
One thing in Moody’s filly’s favour on Friday night, however, is her winning form over the mile too starts back, many over her rivals yet to be tested over the distance.
The Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra-trained Desert Sun filly Twilighting, meanwhile, has improvemtn to make if she is to bounce back from her 10th in the Kewney.
Other notable chances in the Moonee Valley Fillies Classic field and markets that could prove the value bet of the night include last year’s Wakeful Stakes runner-up Rahveel ($13), four length winner at Sale last time out Ametsis ($13) and Moody’s other runner Torah ($17) out to improve on her distant 14th in the Kewney.
