A capacity field of sixteen fillies will line up...
History making Gosford galloper Hay List has unsurprisingly opened odds-on favourite in the 2012 William Reid Stakes betting markets for this Friday night’s star-studded showdown.
Last seen carrying the heaviest weight (58.5kg) to victory in a Newmarket Handicap in 53 years, the John McNair-trained six-year-old will again look to make the history books when they jump the short priced top elect in the $400,000 Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m).
Without Black Caviar to rain on his parade again Hay List has opened at $1.30 in the William Reid Stakes 2012 odds at bookmaker.com.au to salute in his fourth thoroughbred major.
If he salutes for the punters Hay List will become just the second male racehorse in history to win the Newmarket Handicap – William Reid Stakes double joining All Veil.
Facing just seven rivals, Glyn Schofield to ride them from the ideal barrier four William Reid Stakes draw, Hay List is going to take some beating.
Moonee Valley also holds no fears for Hay List who is undefeated there with wins the Group 3 McEwen Stakes (1000m) and Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) there from September 2010.
Having watched and re-watched the replay of his gritty Newmarket win Hay List really should have this one in the bag as they get back to weight-for-age meaning they will face Newmarket runner-up Buffering equal on 58.5kg.
Despite having run second in a photo finish with Hay List last-start, Rob Heathcote’s consistent Queensland sprinter Buffering is not the second shortest horse in the William Reid Stakes odds.
That honour belongs to their stablemate Woorim who pays $10 through bookmaker.com.au.
Drawn wide in eight and ready to swoop late, Oakleigh Plate winner Woorim comes off a fifth in the Newmarket, beaten only two and a half lengths, when they struggled in a huge 22-horse field from their unsuitable inside gate two draw.
Buffering then occupies the third line of William Reid Stakes betting at $12, equal with Newmarket Handicap third placed Foxwedge who carries just 56.5kg on Friday as a three-year-old.
The next best fancied of the field is then Peter Snowden’s always-honest Doomben 10,000 winning mare Beaded at $14.
Lonhro six-year-old Beaded hadn’t finished worse than fourth in her 23 career starts before she too failed in the Newmarket running four and a half lengths away 11th.
In a smaller field on Friday Snowden is hoping to see his old Beaded back.
Rounding out the 2012 Power Track William Reid Stakes markets are then Jim Conlan’s resuming Cox Plate third placegetter Rekindled Interest ($26), Goodwood winner Lone Rock ($31) and the Peter Moody-trained Mid Summer Music ($31) out to hand her trainer with back-to-back wins in the event following the success of her flawless stablemate Black Caviar last year.
