Mick Price’s Blue Diamond Stakes winner Samaready will look to retain her spot at the top of next month’s Golden Slipper odds when she leads out a quality field of fellow two-year-old fillies in the Reisling Stakes 2012 at Rosehill Gardens this Saturday.
The More Than Ready filly maintained her flawless career record last start when putting an easy three lengths on her rivals in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1400m).
Samaready currently pays $4 in the Golden Slipper betting markets, a price that is likely to firm if she wins the $300,000 Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m) on Saturday.
The 2012 Reisling Stakes, also known as the Reisling Slipper Trial, has this year attracted nine acceptors.
Drawn in barrier five with Craig Newitt engaged Samaready is certain to start near odds-on territory in the Reisling Stakes odds after her flying trackwork leading up to the showdown.
One inside of Samaready in barrier four is the other big Reisling Stakes player in the Gerald Ryan-trained Snitzerland.
A nicely bred daughter of Snitzel, Snitzerland is undefeated this season having won the Inglis Premier (1200m) by four and a half lengths first-up last month before her equally impressive three length victory in the Group 3 Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on March 10.
While very aware of Samaready Rosehill-based Ryan, who will also saddle up $31 Golden Slipper fancy Amorino in the colts and geldings $300,000 Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m) on Saturday, is confident that his filly will put up a good challenge and improve heading into the Slipper.
“She came back the Monday after she won (the Blue Diamond) and had a relatively quiet week last week,” Ryan said.
“She worked well on Monday morning on a heavy track.
“This is a step up in class on Saturday so we’ll see where she shits, but I wouldn’t be surprised if she doesn’t measure up.
“On what she’s shown I’m expecting her to run very well on Saturday and still improve a fraction off it.”
Snitzerland pays $11 in the latest Golden Slipper odds at bookmaker.com.au.
“There is probably 12 trainers this morning saying they can win the Slipper and on Saturday afternoon there might only be about two,” Ryan said.
“But I think the two-year-olds are that even this year a lot is going to depend on barrier draws and luck in the running.”
The next shortest-priced of the Reisling Stakes hopefuls for the Golden Slipper on April 7 is John Thompson’s Husson filly Hussousa at a quote of $14 through bookmaker.com.au.
Set to jump from gate three with Blake Shinn in the saddle Hussousa won the Listed Gimcrack Stakes (1000m) on debut at Randwick last October, but is yet to win in 2012.
She ran a good first-up third behind Magic Millions Classic winner Driefontein in the Widden Stakes at Warwick Farm then finished a close second to $7 Golden Slipper chance Pierro in the Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) on a Heavy (9) Rosehill track at the start of the month.
On Saturday Hussousa is likely to be fitted with blinkers after working well in them at a Randwick hit-out on Tuesday, a good move according to Shinn.
“I think the blinkers will be a plus,” Shinn said on Tuesday.
“It’s a very tough race but she looks to be peaking at the right time.
“I rode her this morning in the blinkers and she seemed to handle them fine.
“We’ll know more on race day but they seemed to switch her on a bit more.”
Other notable fillies not without their claims on Saturday then include the Peter Snowden-trained Meidung on the rails, Gai Waterhouse’s maiden Hussonet filly The Broken Shore and the Chris Waller-trained Catkins who has the outside barrier to overcome.
Don’t wait until next month to place your Golden Slipper bets!
