He’s Remarkable Wins 2012 Newcastle Newmarket Handicap

Roger James’ gallant Kiwi galloper He’s Remarkable enjoyed a small consolation win after losing their Group 1 Railway Stakes on protest four months ago, today winning the Newcastle Newmarket Handicap 2012 in Sydney.

Racing for the first time since the Railway Stakes victory in Perth was taken off them in November, Pentire four-year-old He’s Remarkable proved too good for his rivals in the $125,000 Group 3 Newcastle Newmarket Handicap (1400m) this afternoon.

Going out the punters’ pick in the Newcastle Newmarket Handicap field and odds following the earlier scratching of former favourite Fast Clip, He’s Remarkable and jockey Corey Brown saluted for the punters paying $4.60 at jump time through bookmaker.com.au.

As expected the David Payne-trained Latin News got away well from the gates and set a solid early temple while the likes of Star Of Octagonal, Dao Dao and Under The Eiffel settled just off them.

Tony Vasil’s Victorian four-year-old Under The Eiffel, who eventually finished just outside the minor placings in fourth, moved up to hit the lead at the 900-metres with rising nine-year-old Dao Dao picking up approaching the top turn.

The Hawkes-trained Dao Dao then found the front with around 600 metres left to travel.

With 250m to go there were a number of livewire chances as some of the back runners made their move, but it was He’s Remarkable on the outside who surged forward to take home first prize.

On the line the New Zealand raider had three quarters of a length to spare over the second placed Dao Dao ($14) who fought until the end, Todd Howlett’s Star Of Octagonal ($7.50) finishing off the winning Newcastle Newmarket Handicap Trifecta just a just long neck away.

He’s Remarkable, who was always in a good position before chiming in at exactly the right time, finished in a time of 1:22.52 which was about one and a half seconds off the race and course record set by Solo Flyer.

The Newcastle Newmarket Handicap win took He’s Remarkable’s record to six wins from 16 starts for $537, 933 in career prize money.

After He’s Remarkable’s first-up win today connections are likely to continue plans for a shot at the $2 million Group 1 Doncaster Mile Handicap (1600m) at Royal Randwick on April 21.

In the latest 2012 Doncaster Mile odds at bookmaker.com.au He’s Remarkable pays $16 to win.
