Fast Clip Scratched From 2012 Newcastle Newmarket Handicap – Odds Update

Early favourite to win this afternoon’s Newcastle Newmarket Handicap 2012 in Sydney, Fast Clip, has been scratched from the race leaving Kiwi galloper He’s Remarkable at the top of the markets.

Fast Clip has been scratched from the 2012 Newcastle Newmarket Handicap

Gai Waterhouse’s Liverpool City Cup minor placegetter Fast Clip was paying $3.75 to win the $125,000 Group 3 Newcastle Newmarket Handicap (1400m) at 5:00pm (NSW time) today.

Waterhouse, however, has withdrawn the Snippetson four-year-old from the event leaving 13 gallopers to fight it out in the traditional Doncaster Mile lead-up.

New Newcastle Newmarket Handicap betting favourite at bookmaker.com.au is He’s Remarkable who is the definite market mover having firmed in from $6 to $3.80.

Denied the Group 1 Railway Stakes win upon protest last time out at Ascot in November, the Roger James-trained Pentire four-year-old will now jump from barrier four in their resuming run.

Jumping from one of the first four barriers is a statistical advantage as five of the past Newcastle Newmarket Handicap winners have drawn gate one – four.

Also in He’s Remarkable’s favour is the current Dead (4) track rating at Newcastle with the rain hopefully staying away before the big one this arvo.

“The weather forecast is good so things are looking up,” James said.

“He is going into the race as well as I can have him without a trial or a race.

“But he is a stallion now and he is starting to look like one, a real autumn bull.

“So he will be carrying extra condition and that could tell against him.

“I think he can win and wouldn’t be surprised but he could also run on to finish third or fourth and that wouldn’t surprise me either.

“But he is very, very well and a lot stronger than he used to be.”

Four other Newcastle Newmarket Handicap hopefuls are at single figures with #8 Under The Eiffel ($4.20), #10 Star Of Octagonal ($8.50), #9 Latin News ($9) and #6 Shannara ($9) through bookmaker.com.au.

Peter Snowden’s five-year-old Octagonal mare Shannara, a full sister to the brilliant Lonhro, races for the first time since her big two and a half length win in the Listed Ladies Day Cup (1300m) at Hawkesbury in early November.

Drawn in barrier 11, into 10 with the scratching of Fast Clip, Shannara has history against her today but that hasn’t stopped the punters coming for her.

If successful in scoring an upset in Newcastle Race 7 this afternoon Shannara will become just the second mare since 1991 to win the Newcastle Newmarket Handicap joining Techniques (1999).
