Can Red Excitement Press Golden Slipper Claims? – 2012 Todman Stakes

Queanbeyan trainer Neville Layt is hoping Red Excitement can upset a host of quality colts and geldings in this weekend’s 2012 Todman Stakes (1200m) at Sydney’s Rosehill Gardens.

Layt admitted the gelding would have to upset some classy young horses to claim top honours in the Golden Slipper lead up but is confident he can challenge.

“He’s in a very strong race,” he said.

“You’ve got to be in them to win them…if you’re not you have no hope.”

Red Excitement will have to upset a quality field that includes Pierro (pictured) to win the Todman Stakes

One of the top guns in the field for the $300,000 Group 2 sprint is early Golden Slipper fancy Pierro.

The unbeaten colt will run from barrier three on Saturday and is fresh off a Silver Slipper Stakes win last start.

A son of Lohnro, the Gai Waterhouse trained horse currently sits as third favourite ($7.00) in the early Golden Slipper market at

Also set to run are Epaulette, Faustus and Shelford who all sit at the top end of the preliminary Golden Slipper market.

Epaulette won the Black Opal Stakes race in which Red Excitement finished eighth but Layt is not concerned by the result instead attributing it to a wet track.

“The only thing that beat him the other day was the track over there,” Layt said.

The John O’Shea trained pair of Faustus and Shelford sit at $17.00 and $26.00 respectively in the market for the prized race for two-year-old horses.

Both have experienced good results to date with Faustus following up a debut win in December with a second-place effort in the Black Opal Stakes.

Shelford has only had one start to date but he finished a very promising second just behind current Slipper fourth favourite Raceway in the Canonbury Stakes at Warwick Farm in February.

Red Excitement has one victory from five starts which came in the Lighting Ridge 2YO Plate in Canberra late last month.
