John Thompson trained five-year-old Trusting will be out to score his first ever Group 1 win when he runs in the 2012 Ranvet Stakes at Rosehill Gardens this Saturday.
The son of Tale Of The Cat has achieved victory three times at Group 2 level but top honours have proved elusive in 13 starts in Group 1 events.
He has had two races so far this year and has been building nicely with an eighth-place effort in the Apollo Stakes followed by a highly promising third-place finish in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes behind Shoot Out and Danleigh.
The $400,000 Ranvet Stakes is run over 2000 metres and the extra distance should suit Trusting whose last victory in September’s Group 2 Hill Stakes came at the stayer’s length.
Experienced jockey Blake Shinn is set to take over the riding job from Joao Moereia and is feeling confident about Trusting’s chances of recording his first ever Group 1 win.
“He’s come to hand fantastic and his work has been solid all week. I couldn’t be happier with him,” Shinn said.
“It’s a tough race but he’s a Group 1 performer and looks a leading chance in that race.”
Trusting has four wins from 23 starts and has collected over $900,000 in prize money.
Despite never winning at Group 1 level, he has come close and on three occasions crossed the line with runner up finishes.
If he is to win on Saturday, he will have to overcome a high quality field that includes Chipping Norton Stakes winner Shoot Out, Australian Cup winner Manighar and runner up Southern Speed.
The Chris Waller trained Shoot Out has been in sensational form with his worst finish in 2012 a third-place effort in the Group 2 Expressway Stakes at Rosehill in February.
Southern Speed will be looking to exact revenge on French horse Manighar who beat the four-year-old mare by a nose in the Australian Cup at Flemington on March 10.
The Ranvet Stakes is one of two Group 1 races to take place at Rosehill this Saturday with the other the Coolmore Classic for fillies and mares.
