Wild and Proud Features in 2012 Phar Lap Stakes Field

Hobartville Stakes winner Wild And Proud headlines a 12-horse field that was today named to contest the Group 2 2012 Phar Lap Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse this Saturday.

The Gai Waterhouse trained gelding will be looking to make a quick turnaround after finishing a disappointing tenth in last weekend’s Randwick Guineas.

Just The Tonic and Rekindled Alliance

Rekindled Alliance is set to resume his Aumumn campaign in the Phar Lap Stakes

Prior to the Randwick Guineas, the three-year-old had recorded two consecutive victories which included the Hobartville Stakes where Wild and Proud took top honours after a protest against Manawanui was upheld.

The son of Snowland should appreciate the drop back in distance when he runs from the inside barrier this weekend after falling away in the final stages of the Randwick Guineas (1600m) which served as his longest race to date.

Peter Snowden trained colt Benfica will be looking to re-start his 2012 campaign after a horror run so far this year.

A son of Lohnro, Benfica has three wins from seven starts but has recorded two consecutive ninth-place finishes so far in 2012.

Prior to his return in January, the three-year-old last ran in June 2011 when he recorded victory over Hot Snitzel in the Group 1 T.J Smith at Eagle Farm.

One horse coming into the Phar Lap Stakes in solid form is three-year-old gelding That’s The One.

Trained by Colin and Cindy Anderson, That’s The One followed up a win in the Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes with a respectable fourth-place finish in the Australian Guineas.

Craig Williams will be in the saddle on Saturday when the gelding runs out of a favourable mid-field barrier (6).

Redoute’s Choice colt Rekindled Alliance will run on Saturday as trainer Paul Messara looks to get the three-year-old’s Autumn campaign back on track.

He was withdrawn due to wet weather last weekend and will use the race as a stop before running in the Rosehill Guineas or Tulloch Stakes with the eventual target the Australian Derby on April 14.

An obstacle for Rekindled Alliance could be a damp track with jockey Corey Brown earlier this week admitting he had concerns about the horse in the wet.

“I just hope it isn’t too wet. He just can’t accelerate on it the same way he does on top of the ground,” Brown said.

Other horses included to run in the Phar Lap Stakes are John O’Shea trained Colorado Clare and gelding Aeronautical who will be ridden by experienced Sydney jockey Hugh Bowman.

A huge Saturday of racing featuring the Group 1 Coolmore Classic and Ranvet Stakes is set to take place at Rosehill and the place to back a winner is bookmaker.com.au.

The Australian owned bookie is the Races.com.au favourite due to their amazing odds and $300 bonus bet offer for new customers.
