2012 Albury Cup – Final Field and Barrier Draw

A decent field of stayers have today been named in the final field for the Listed $170,000 2012 Albury Cup (2000m) which will take place this Friday.

Among the headline acts in the Albury feature event is New Zealand horse Muirfield who is chasing a third consecutive victory.

Trained by Michael Moroney, the gelding backed up a win in Sale in February with a storming three-length victory in the Le Pine Funerals Handicap at Sandown-Hillside on March 7.

King Diamond

King Diamond will run in Friday's Albury Cup

The four-year-old has drawn a decent barrier for Saturday and will come out of gate 10 with Nicholas Hall in the saddle.

David Hayes trained gelding Extra Zero is the top weight (58kg) but the extra weight is not the only obstacle the five-year-old will have to overcome on Friday.

The winner of three races from 34 starts will be ridden by Nash Rawiller but the experienced jockey will have his work cut out when starting from barrier 16.

Leading trainer Peter Moody has one runner contesting the Albury Cup with five-year-old King Diamond.

The gelding will have to turn around a recent run of poor form and has not won since he took out the Roy Higgins Quality in March last year.

One thing that will not trouble King Diamond is the distance as he is an experienced stayer with two of his five victories coming at distances of 2000 metres or more.

Micalong is used to running in country cup races and is heading into the race in good form after taking out the Orange Cup in March 9.

Trained by Mick Miladinovic, the gelding has recorded six victories from 22 career starts.

Other horses set to run in the Albury Cup this Friday include World Wide, Bid Spotter, Over Quota, London Stripe and Riverina Highway.

Australian Cup runner Illo was included in nominations for the Albury Cup but will instead run in the Ranvet Stakes this Saturday at Rosehill.
