Nominations – Phar Lap Stakes 2012

The 2012 Phar Lap Stakes stands as a a key race on a bumper nine-race card to take place at Rosehill Gardens this weekend as part of 2012 Coolmore Classic Day.

A total of 18 horses have been nominated for the $175,000 Group 2 event which is exclusively open to three-year-old horses and will be run over 1500 metres.

Included in the nominations is the Paul Messara trained Rekindled Alliance who will be looking to get his Autumn program back on track after rain denied the colt a chance of showing his wares in last Saturday’s Randwick Guineas.

Just The Tonic and Rekindled Alliance

Rekindled Alliance has been nominated for the 2012 Phar Lap Stakes

The promising son of Redoute’s Choice is being targeted for the Australian Derby on April 14 and last ran in the Hobartville Stakes when he finished sixth.

Group 1 winner Benfica has been nominated and will be looking to turn around some horrible recent form.

The Peter Snowden trained colt impressed plenty last year when he won the Group 1 T.J Smith ahead of Hot Snitzel at Eagle Farm but in two runs this year he has not managed better than ninth.

Another nominated Snowden horse that will be aiming to turn around some recent poor form is Free Wheeling.

The colt finished tenth in the Hobartville Stakes and in his only other start this year he produced a seventh-place finish in the Royal Sovereign Stakes.

Australian Guineas runner Fontelina is another to have been included in Phar Lap Stakes nominations and the Anthony Cummings trained gelding has a decent record.

He has scored victories three times from nine career starts with the most recent coming at Rosehill in late February.

Prolific trainer Peter Moody has two horses included in Phar Lap Stakes nominations with Huegill and Chateau Margaux who is coming off three consecutive victories.
