Boom Kiwi filly Silent Achiever has opened top of the 2012 Australian Derby odds for next month’s Royal Randwick classic, the lightly-raced three-year-old out to secure the New Zealand – Australian Derby double.
The daughter of O’Reilly has won five of her seven career starts to date, all in her native New Zealand, including her last four at Group level.
Prepared by Roger James in Cambridge, Silent Achiever scored her maiden Group victory on New Year’s Day at Ellerslie taking out the Group 2 Radio Live Championship Stakes (2100m).
A month later she travelled to Te Rapa and beat home Ocean Park in the Group 3 Waikato Guineas (2000m) before heading back to Ellerslie to take out both the Group 2 The Falls Avondale Guineas (2100m) and most recently the Group 1 New Zealand Derby (2400m).
With ace hoop James McDonald aboard in the NZ Derby, Silent Achiever was third last a lap out from the end but showed true grit and ability when swooping out wide without cover to wind them up, hit the front with 300 metres to go and then pull away over the final 100 metres to put two and a half lengths on her closest rival.
Now Silent Achiever is being prepared for a trip across the Tasman to tackle the $1.5 million Group 1 ATC Australian Derby (2400m) on April 14.
Our preferred online bookie bookmaker.com.au recently released their futures markets on the Australian Derby, Silent Achiever the current $8 favourite.
The only other hopeful under double figures is then $9 chance Strike The Stars.
Anthony Cummings’ Savabeel gelding ran a good second behind Mosheen in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington on March 3 before their last start seventh, again behind Mosheen, the Group 1 Royal Randwick Guineas (1600m) last time out.
Other early 2012 Australian Guineas betting fancies include:
- Ambidexter ($10 bookmaker.com.au) – Peter Snowden-trained Commands colt was an eye-catching fourth in the Randwick Guineas beaten less than a length, will improve over more distance, also finished fourth to Doctor Doom in last year’s Spring Champion Stakes over 2000m at Randwick
- Mosheen ($10 bookmaker.com.au) – The Derby is just one of the options for Robert Smerdon’s superlative filly, winner of the Crown Oaks – Australian Guineas – Randwick Guineas triple and entering the history books on number of occasions for a number of reasons throughout her career to date, could go the ATC Oaks against her own kind instead, but the distance holds no fears and neither does coming up against the boys
- Laser Hawk ($12 bookmaker.com.au) – Gai Waterhouse’s up-and-comer was undefeated until their close third in the Randwick Guineas, how they step up in distance is key to their chances but have done everything right so far
One longer-priced hopeful that has caught the eye recently and that could prove a juicy ATC Derby bet this year is Highly Recommended, now paying $21 through bookmaker.com.au following their victory in the Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes (2040m) at Moonee Valley last Friday night.
The Peter Moody-trained Fastnet Rock colt beat home a field full of Derby hopes when they stepped up to a distance greater than a mile for the first time, earning a shot at the ATC Derby.

Late entries for the David Jones Australian Derby will close on Tuesday April 10, drawing a hefty $40,000 fee for connections.
