2012 Albury Cup Nominations Include Big Names

Plenty of well known horses have been nominated for the $170,000 Listed 2012 Albury Cup which is set to take place over 2000 metres this Friday.

A total of 22 entries have been received but with many horses dual nominated for various races this weekend, it will be interesting to see who actually fills the final 16 available spots.

King Diamond

King Diamond is nominated for the 2012 Albury Cup

Included in the nominations list are a large number of international stayers such as German Australian Cup runner Illo and Ireland’s London Stripe.

Trained by the prolific Bart Cummings, Illo ran last in the Australian Cup but finished second in his previous start in February’s Group 2 Peter Young Stakes.

The six-year-old is a proven stayer with all three of his career victories coming at distances over 2000 metres.

London Stripe is trained by Albury local Brett Cavanough and will be looking to improve on his two career wins from nine starts.

New Zealand gelding Muirfield will make the trip to Albury and is on track to score a third consecutive victory after wins in handicap races at both Sale and Sandown-Hillside in his last two starts.

Two of the bigger name local horses nominated to run are Bid Spotter and the Peter Moody trained King Diamond.

Bid Spotter is coming off some recent poor form but has seven wins from 35 starts which includes the 2011 Hobart Cup.

Five-year-old King Diamond will also need to turn around some recent poor form but the gelding has a decent record of five wins from 18 outings.

One horse heading into the race in reasonable form is the Bede Murray trained World Wide who came second in the Canberra Cup on March 11.

Other horses included in the 2012 Albury Cup nominations are Micalong, This Cat’s Magic and Riverina Highway.
