Hot Snitzel Targets 2012 Stradbroke Handicap

Sydney horseman Gerald Ryan is planning another trip to Queensland for the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival mid-year with his smart Group 2 winning three-year-old Hot Snitzel who is being aimed at the Stradbroke Handicap 2012.

Hot Snitzel is 2012 Stradbroke Handicap-bound

The Sunshine State’s richest race, the $1 million Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) is set to run at Eagle Farm on June 9, and Hot Snitzel will be working his way through the end of autumn features in a month’s time with an eye on the Stradbroke prize.

Group 1 placed during last year’s Brisbane Winter Carnival when second behind Benfica in the TJ Smith (1600m), Hot Snitzel also enjoyed a big three length win in the Group 2 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) last June as well as a close third before that in the Group 2 Champagne Classic (1200m) at Doomben.

“He really took the next step when he went up there (to Brisbane),” Chris Ward from Triple Crown Syndications said of Hot Snitzel.

“A lot of the owners actually live up there as well and they love having him in their own backyard as well.”

This year they beat home Golden Rose winner Manawanui first-up in the Group 2 Royal Sovereign Stakes (1200m) at Warwick Farm before their solid last-start fifth in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m).

“You always like to see them return that next prep, especially under those sorts of circumstances,” Ward said speaking of connections turning down a $1 million offer from Hong Kong interest for Hot Snitzel prior to their Royal Sovereign win.

“It was pretty close to a Group 1 field that day and to see him return like that it justifies the faith you put in the horse.”

Connections opted to bypass the Randwick Guineas, won by brilliant filly Mosheen, last Saturday in favour of a freshen up for Hot Snitzel.

Ryan indicated that the horse would likely run next-up either in the $350,000 Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) at Royal Randwick on April 21 or the $125,000 Listed Gosford Guineas (1200m) the next day.

Last year’s Stradbroke Handicap winner Sincero followed a similar path having won the 2011 Gosford Guineas first-up by an easy five lengths before winning the Inglis 3YO Guineas, running 11th in the Group 2 QTC Cup (1300m) and then scoring an upset in the Stradbroke.

“We’ll be looking at either of those two races and also be keeping in mind the Inglis Guineas which is a half a million dollar race over 1400m at set weights which should be ideal for him,” Ward said.

“Gerald (Ryan) still has him in the stable and is just ticking over at the minute as ultimately we are working our way towards the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap.”
