2012 Newcastle Newmarket Handicap Field Revealed

The Group racing action of the Sydney Autumn Carnival continues at Newcastle this Wednesday, March 21, with the running of the always popular Newcastle Newmarket Handicap 2012.

Set to run as Newcastle Race 7 at 5:00pm (NSW time), the $125,000 Group 3 HSG Newcastle Newmarket Handicap (1400m) has drawn a final field of 14 gallopers.

Two horses currently share the 58kg topweight for the handicap feature with the Hawkes-trained Dao Dao (barrier 12) and Roger James’ Kiwi raider He’s Remarkable (barrier five).

Rising nine-year-old gelding Dao Dao goes into the Newcastle Newmarket Handicap second-up for the season following their sixth place finish in the Listed VIC TAB Guaranteed $2M Quaddie (1400m) at Flemington on March 3.

It has been a long time between drinks for the son of Shinko Forest, however, Dao Dao not having won a race since the Royal Parma Stakes at Rosehill in April of 2009 and they are likely to jump one of the roughies in the Newcastle Newmarket Handicap odds at bookmaker.com.au.

He’s Remarkable, on the other hand, is sure to be one of the better fancied hopefuls with Corey Brown booked for the ride on the Pentire four-year-old.

Winner of a Flemington feature over the mile on Emirates Stakes Day last spring, He’s Remarkable traveled over to Perth only to lose the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m) upon protest to second over the line Luckygray.

James will be hoping for better luck on Wednesday as he races He’s Remarkable for the first time since their Railway Stakes heartbreak.

Following on 57.5kg is then Guy Walter’s brilliant country cups horse Straight Albert, due to be ridden by Kathy O’Hara from barrier eight.

Magic Albert four-year-old Straight Albert has won their past four straight starts including the Listed Tattersalls Club Cup (2095m) at Warwick Farm on January 2 and the Listed Gosford Cup (2100m) last-start on January 14, O’Hara aboard for both.

They were also the Goulburn Cup winner over the mile last November and although they go back in distance to just 1400-metres, from 2100-metres last start, Straight Albert should be very competitive on Wednesday.

Other headline acceptors for the 2012 Newcastle Newmarket Handicap field include the Gai Waterhouse-trained Liverpool City Cup third placed Fast Clip (barrier four), Tony Vasil’s consistent Mossman gelding Under The Eiffel (barrier 10), the David Payne-trained improver Latin News (barrier six), last-start Rosehill winner over 1500-metres Star Of Octagonal (barrier seven) and Paul Murray’s Alma’s Fury on the rails in barrier one.

The Newcastle Newmarket Handicap is also a handy race for bookmaker.com.au punters to keep an eye on as a guide for upcoming autumn features including the $400,000 Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill on Golden Slipper Day, April 7, and the lucrative $2 million Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Randwick on April 28.
