Star Mosheen Takes Out 2012 Randwick Guineas

Mosheen has cemented her status as an elite level filly by backing up her Australian Guineas win with victory in today’s 2012 Royal Randwick Guineas.

In a repeat performance of her stellar Australian Guineas run, Mosheen was ridden terrifically by jockey Danny Nikolic from an unfavourable barrier (14) to take top honours in the Group 1 $500,000 race.

With 500 metres to go, it looked as if it might be a repeat performance of the Hobartville Stakes with race favourite Manawanui and Gai Waterhouse trained Wild and Proud pushing each other hard.

As they came in to the 400 metre mark, Sydney jockey Tommy Berry pushed Manawanui for all the gelding had and he responded initially before fading in the middle of the straight.

Mosheen, now a three time Group 1 winner, responded to Nikolic as he managed to get her a clear run down the straight and eventually took victory by a head over Said Com and Laser Hawk.

Trainer Robert Smerdon was delighted with the Fastnet Rock filly who he thought might run out of time with 200 metres left to run.

“She was getting a bit of a buffeting. I’d probably conceded at the 200 metre mark that she would run well but would probably run out of time,” Smerdon said.

“She’s got that great turn of foot, she really can quicken.

“She’s done everything we’ve thrown at her.”

It is a matter of two races for what will be the super star filly’s next chapter with either the Rosehill Guineas or the Vinery Stud Stakes on the agenda.

As they headed into the straight, Mosheen received a slight bump but jockey Nikolic rode her impressively to secure a clear path and he was full of praise for the horse post race, describing her as a “class act.”

“She’s just got the gears and she will relax and take any run. It got a little bit tight there a couple of times,” Nikolic said.

“She’s really relaxing well. From about the 1200 [metre mark] I knew I was going to be hard to beat.

“She kept focused and she was just too good for them today.”
