Skyline Stakes 2012 – Ashokan Upsets Raceway

John O’Shea trained Ashokan has performed admirably to edge out odds-on favourite Raceway and the heavily backed Collect to take out the Group 3 2012 Skyline Stakes at Royal Randwick today.

The $11.00 winner was not given much of a chance before his second ever start but he set a solid tempo throughout the back end of the race and the two favourites could not match him.

The More Than Ready Colt pushed his claims for a Golden Slipper start after John O’Shea scratched his other Slipper hopeful Shelford on the back of a slow track rating today in Sydney.

He ran with blinkers on today and shot out of the gates keenly but jockey Jim Cassidy rode him well to take top billings in the $125,000 race.

O’Shea said he was not surprised about the result after his work at the track but insisted there is plenty of room for improvement.

“He’d shown every indication at home that he’d be competitive today, [but] he’s still doing a little wrong,” he said.

“He’s got gate good speed and he got himself into the race.”

O’Shea said with the Golden Slipper an open prospect this year, there is no reason why Ashokan can not challenge for the prized two-year-old title.

“He’s got very forward gate speed and if you happen to get conditions that have existed at Slippers over the last few years which have been quite rain affected, he’s obviously going to be competitive, ” he said.

Raceway went into the race as $1.75 favourite but coming from the middle of the pack as they hit the straight he left his run a little too late and had to settle for second in a photo over Fastnet Rock colt Collect.

Prior to today’s racing at Randwick, Raceway was fourth favourite in the early Golden Slipper market.

The day of racing is just getting started at Sydney’s Royal Randwick Racecourse and there is plenty of action to be had at for the rest of the races.

Home of the ”$300 the Australian owned bookmaker is the place to get the best odds for all of today’s Randwick Guineas Day action.
