Huge Outsider takes 2012 Wenona Girl Handicap

Nobody gave Rose Of Peace a chance heading into 2012 Wenona Girl Handicap but the rank outsider beat a host of better rated horses to take top honours in the Listed $100,000 event.

The Gary Portelli trained mare was untouched by the punters and started the race at a massive $101.00 at

The four-year-old made plenty stand up and take notice when she produced an unexpected but excellent run on a wet track to beat Quidnunc and Alberton Park.

Portelli said he was surprised at the victory especially given the fact she had to overcome a terrible barrier 14 draw as well as a quality 15-horse field.

“We were honest in our approach today. We were badly weighted, [it was] a very strong race and we drew badly,” he said.

“She’s an honest horse but I couldn’t see her beating these horses at the weight.”

Portelli was full of praise for jockey Brenton Advulla who produced an excellent run to keep the mare untouched down the centre of the track.

“Full credit to the rider, he got her in to a good spot and she’s just come back a bit stronger I think.”

Rose Of Peace now has two wins from 17 outings, with today’s race coming as her first Listed win.

She beat a quality field that included the likes of Anthony Cummings trained Gybe and Peter Moody’s Curtana.
