Local gelding Maules Creek has upset some quality international stayers to take top honours in the Listed 2012 Randwick City Stakes (2000m) in Sydney today.
The bookmaker.com.au third favourite ($8.00) built on a decent third-place finish last start in the Parramatta Cup to finish impressively in front of New Zealand gelding Herculian Prince and British race favourite Permit.
Gai Waterhouse trained Herculian Prince ran solidly after setting an early pace and did well to hold on for second.
Ridden by Jim Cassidy, the John Thompson trained Maules Creek held his position well, hanging just off the lead before stepping up a gear as the pack entered the straight.
The four-year-old overtook Herculian Prince with 100 metres to go and from that moment it was never in doubt as the gelding kicked away unchallenged.
John Thompson was pleased with the four-year-old whose performance in the wet came as somewhat of a surprise.
“He’s been knocking on the door. To be honest I don’t think he handles the wet,” Thompson said.
“He seemed to battle his way through it today.”
“I was very much contemplatng scratching him, so in hindsight I’m very happy.”
Thompson was full of praise for experienced jockey Jim Cassidy who rode Maules Creek impressively down the inside.
“A great ride by Jimmy, he just helped him,” Thompson said.
“Everyone else wanted to get off the fence but he just stuck to the rail.”
Maules Creek now has four wins from 11 starts and this is his first victory in wet conditions.
Permit, who finished third, had a solid hit out ahead of the Sydney Cup goal race for the imported stayer.
