Battle of the Imports – Randwick City Stakes 2012 Form and Tips

With five foreign horses named to start in the 2012 Randwick City Stakes (2000m), it seems to be a matter more of which one rather than if an international horse will take top honours in the Listed stayer’s race.

British gelding Permit and Gai Waterhouse trained Herculian Prince are currently impossible to split in the bookmaker.com.au market, with both paying $5.50.

The Races.com.au team are also having a tough time splitting the pair but think Permit may just have the edge coming in to the $100,000 event in better form.

Herculian Prince

The Chris Waller trained five-year-old started his 2012 run with a victory at Rosehill in January and followed it up with a third-place effort last start in late February.

He is a proven stayer with his two wins from nine starts both coming at distances over 2000 metres.

Six-year-old Herculian Prince has nine wins from 27 starts and while it has been a long time between wins, the experienced gelding is used to tackling quality fields and is coming off a fifth-place finish in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes last weekend.

While the Races.com.au team are predicting an international finish for the top two places, a number of local horses can challenge the two favourites.

Coliseo is the next best in the bookmaker.com.au betting at $7.00 but the five-year-old is coming off a six-day turn around after running third in Sunday’s Canberra Cup.

The Norm Gardner trained gelding arrives in Sydney on the back of some excellent form at lesser tracks and has five wins from 19 starts.

With a favourable barrier four draw, Nextanix is just behind Coliseo in betting ($7.50) and the Kerry Parker trained four-year-old is a known place-getter having recorded two wins and seven placings from 17 starts.

The Races.com.au pick for third trails those two slightly in betting and it is the John Thompson trained Maules Creek at $8.00.

The promising four-year-old has three wins from 10 starts but has not finished worse than fourth in his last five starts.

He was ridden by Jim Cassidy last start when finishing third in the Parramatta Cup and he will again be in the saddle when he runs from barrier seven on Saturday.

Other local chances include Platamone Castle ($7.50) and Merlin Mustang ($8.00) while Irish Melbourne Cup runner Hawk Island provides some value at $13.00.
