Last year’s Inglis Sires Produce Stakes runner up Uate will return from a spell this weekend in the Listed 2012 Eskimo Prince Stakes at Sydney’s Royal Randwick Racecourse.
The talented colt has not raced since October last year when he finished a disappointing eighth in the Coolmore Stud Stakes after a highly promising early career.
It was later revealed that his late 2011 campaign was impacted by a viral throat infection and trainer Kris Lees is confident the three-year-old is back to where he was when he made many in the industry take note at the start of 2011.
He won on debut in Newcastle in February last year before chalking up two more consecutive victories which included the Group 3 Skyline Stakes.
The winning run ended when Uate was beaten by half a length in the Group 1 Inglis Sires Produce Stakes by well known horse Helmet.
Uate will go in to the Eskimo Prince Stakes with plenty up against him including carrying the top weight of 59kg and a difficult barrier nine draw.
Trainer Lees said he would be surprised if he managed victory first up but expects a good performance from the colt.
“He will improve again off this run and the 59 kilos is a leveller because he’s not a big horse,” he said.
Uate has been nominated twice before this race but the weather has spoiled his return to the track until now.
“We’re happy to go to the races now,” Lees said.
“He had some setbacks last preparation but this preparation the only hold-ups have been uncertainty over the weather.”
If Uate is to win on Saturday he will have to beat some quality horses including Fireball Quality Winner Nobby Snip who is chasing a third consecutive victory.
Uate is currently paying $13.00 to take top honours in the $100,000 Listed event.
