Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
While all the talk this week has been about tomorrow’s Randwick Guineas Day in Sydney there is plenty of racing happening on the other side of the country at Perth’s Ascot Racecourse.
There are five Listed races occurring at the top Western Australian track and with plenty of prize money up for grabs, we are likely to see the best of the West in action tomorrow.
We at Races.com.au are here to bring you a betting and form preview ahead of all the big Perth races so you can make some informed decisions when placing your bets at bookmaker.com.au.
Race 2 – 1:35pm St Bart’s Perth Stakes (1100m)
Jestpatim ($2.30) heads the betting in the first of the Listed races to take place at Ascot this Saturday and is fresh off a victory last start. The gelding also has a favourable barrier five draw but will have to beat the in form Luke’s Luck ($3.70). The Trevor Andrews trained horse has one win from three starts and is coming off a second-place effort in the Listed Supremacy Stakes at Ascot on March 3.
Some value can be found with Express Service at $12.00 with the Darren McAuliffe trained horse a two-time place getter. The most experienced runner with eight starts is El Rijes who is paying a massive $61.
Race 3 – 2:15pm Grant Thronton Australia Limited – W.A.T.C Stakes (1100m)
Seven horses will contest the event that is tailor made for sprinters and worth $80,000. Odds-on favourite to bring home the bacon is Summer Scorcher winner Latoria at $2.35. The Jim Taylor trained mare is fresh from a spell and is likely to set the pace when she comes flying out of barrier two with jockey Jason Brown on top.
If Power Princess can deal with the top weight of 59kg, the $4.40 chance can challenge Latoria for top honours. Also coming off a spell, the Simon Miller trained mare has an impressive record that includes eight wins from 18 starts. Werd ($4.20) ran second to Latoria in December’s Summer Scorcher and ran well first up in the Cyril Flower Stakes in late February. One other horse likely to put a case forward in the W.A.T.C Stakes is All Friared Up ($4.20) who will run from barrier six.
Race 4 – 2:55pm Focus Minerals Pty Ltd – Gimcrack Stakes (1100m)
Some of the best two-year-old fillies in the West will line up to test their wares over 1100m in the $80,000 Gimcrack Stakes. One filly that has plenty of potential is odds-on favourite Miss Solis ($2.05). The Simon Miller trained horse is coming off a one length victory in the Supremacy Stakes and is unbeaten from three starts.
It looks to be a battle of two horses with $5.00 second favourite Darlington Abbey also unbeaten and took victory in the Magic Millions Perth 2YO Classic in February. Behind the two front runners are a whole host of horses sitting at $9.50 including Secret Scandal, Vonlenska and The Danehill Rose.
Race 6 – 4:05pm Broome International Airport – Natasha Stakes (2200m)
At 2200 metres, the 2012 Natasha Stakes for three-year-old fillies is one for the stayers. The top two horses according to the markets are currently impossible to split with both Pop Culture and Elite Bell paying $3.90. Fresh off a win in the Ascot 1000 Guineas, Pop Culture has been in sizzling hot form but will have to overcome a barrier 12 draw to score victory tomorrow.
Elite Belle ran second to Pop Culture in the Ascot 1000 Guineas and has received are much more favourable barrier draw of four. Elite Belle’s trainer Grant Williams is looking for his second straight Natasha Stakes win following the success of Dreamaway. Third place in Ascot 1000 Guineas was Stay Lady Stay ($7.50) and she gets her chance to exact some revenge over her rivals tomorow.
Race 7 – 4:42pm Schweppes – J.C. Roberts Stakes (1800m)
A huge 20-horse field will line up in what is the last Listed race of the day at Ascot Racecourse. One in form horse set to run is Flag Officer ($6.00) who is coming off a win in the TJ Smith Trophy on March 3 and has three wins from nine outings. The runner up in that race was Dash For Home and the gelding will start as $4.40 favourite tomorrow when he looks to get his revenge.
Full Reign ($6.50) stands behind the top two in the betting but is very capable of challenging for top honours tomorrow. The gelding ran fourth in the TJ Smith Trophy which followed victory in the Budget Challenge Stakes at Ascot on February 18.
