Randwick Guineas Odds 2012 – Manawanui Opens Favourite

They have been defeated in their two first-up runs for 2012 but the punters and bookies aren’t shying away from Manawanui with Ron Leemon’s Group 1 winner opening top of the odds for this Saturday’s 2012 Randwick Guineas.

Manawanui has opened top of the 2012 Randwick Guineas odds for Saturday

Of the 17 smart three-year-olds engaged for the $500,000 Group 1 Turnpoint Royal Randwick Guineas (1600m), running as Randwick Race 6 at 4:20pm, it is Golden Rose hero Manawanui leading the way.

In the latest Randwick Guineas odds at our preferred online bookie bookmaker.com.au Manawanui, in barrier 11 with Tommy Berry to take over riding duties for the suspended Glyn Schofield, is paying $3.10 to win.

Manawanui hasn’t been seen in the winner’s stall since his victory in the Group 2 Mitchelton Wines Vase (2040m) at Moonee Valley last October, after which he ran a credible sixth when failing to step up to the 2500-metres of the Victoria Derby.

This season the talented Oratorio gelding has had two runs for two heartbreaking losses.

First-up he was a long-neck away second to Hot Snitzel in the Group 2 Royal Sovereign Stakes (1200m) at Warwick Farm on February 18.

Last start Manawanui was first past the post in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill but lost the race on protest with original runner-up Wild And Proud, also backing up in the in the Randwick Guineas on Saturday and rated a $12 chance in the bookmaker.com.au markets, was awarded the win.

Connections are quietly confident that Manawanui’s time to shine will come in the Randwick Guineas this weekend, but they are also wary of the only filly in the field, Mosheen.

Also drawn awkwardly in gate 14, Robert Smerdon’s brilliant Fastnet Rock filly is the current Randwick Guineas betting market mover at bookmaker.com.au now paying $3.50.

Mosheen more than showed off her ability last start when she beat a strong open field by an easy three lengths in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m), but she sees Randwick for the first time on Saturday.

These two are the only Randwick Guineas horses at single-figures at bookmaker.com.au and while it is hard to imagine the winner not being one of this talented duo there have been plenty of upsets of late in the three-year-old arena.

So who are the other major players?

As mentioned above Gai Waterhouse’s Hobartville Stakes winner Wild And Proud ($12 bookmaker.com.au) will look to be first over the line this time but they have the far outside barrier to overcome.

Two other runners occupy the third line of Randwick Guineas betting along with Wild And Proud with Waterhouse’s other hopeful, the unbeaten Laser Hawk, and Chris Waller’s relatively unknown O’Reilly gelding Said Com coming off a second behind Laser Hawk over 1500-metres at Rosehill last month.

Following in the markets are then the Peter Moody-trained Hobartville third placed Moment Of Change ($13 bookmaker.com.au), Anthony Cummings’ local Strike The Stars ($14 bookmaker.com.au) coming off a second to Mosheen in the Australian Guineas and Kiwi raider Ocean Park ($15 bookmaker.com.au) who has won three of their five starts to date including the Group 3 Wellington Stakes over the mile back home at Trentham.
