Randwick City Stakes Betting – Hard to Split Top Two

Two international horses currently sit at the top end of the betting market for the Listed 2012 Randwick City Stakes which will run as part of an eight-race Randwick Guineas Day card this Saturday.

British gelding Permit and Gai Waterhouse trained New Zealand horse Herculian Prince are currently equal favourites at $5.50.

The Randwick City Stakes is run over 2000 metres which should suit Permit as the Chris Waller trained horse has won over the distance before.

He has recorded two wins from nine starts and is coming off a third-place effort last start over 1800 metres at Rosehill.

Herculian Prince will be looking to turn around a disastrous run of form, with the six-year-old last recording victory in October 2010.

One thing that won’t be a problem for the gelding is the distance as he has won twice over 2000 metres and will also be aided by a barrier two draw with Nash Rawiller in the saddle.

Next back in the betting is Merlin Mustang ($6.50) who is fresh off a victory last start and has had a very successful early career of four wins from eight outings.

Nextanix ($7.00) and Maules Creek ($7.50) sit just behind the gelding which suggests it could be a tight race in the Randwick City Stakes on Saturday.

Nextanix has won just two times from 17 starts but has placed seven times and will run from the favourable barrier four position.

Norm Gardner trained Coliseo provides some value for the punters at $9.50 but faces a short turn around after running third in the Canberra Cup on Sunday.

The gelding’s trainer remaines unconcerned by the six-day turn around for his horse who has five wins from 19 starts.

“The short turnaround doesn’t worry him. I’ve backed him up quickly before and it didn’t faze him. All he does is eat and sleep,” Gardner said.

“The Randwick track is going to be a beautiful surface, it’s going to be a similar standard of race, and he’s pulled up tremendous so we’ll give him a go at it.”

Other horses set to run in the 2012 Randwick City Stakes are Melbourne Cup runner Hawk Island ($12.00), Platamone Castle ($13.00) and On Every Level ($14.00).
