The Group 1 2012 Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Royal Randwick on April 28 will be the first stop during a short stint in Australia for 2011 Rosehill Guineas winner Jimmy Choux.
The reigning New Zealand horse of the year will embark on a brief Australian campaign that will also include the Group 1 Doomben Cup in Brisbane on May 19.
Trainer Jason Bary said the four-year-old will head into his next campaign in good shape after being spelled following a disappointing ninth-place finish in the Hong Kong Mile at Sha Tin in December.
With the main aim of the Cox Plate still well and truly in Bary’s sights, the champion horse will be spelled following his brief Australian run.
“He’ll go to Sydney for the Queen Elizabeth and then on to the Doomben Cup and he’ll spell after that,” Bary said.
“His main aim in the spring will be the Cox Plate.”
Jimmy Choux has scored 12 victories from 24 starts and collected nearly $3 million in prize money.
In 2011 he became the first horse since Surfers Paradise in 1990 to win the prized double of the 2000 New Zealand Guineas and the New Zealand Derby.
The New Zealand horse shot to prominence in Australian racing circles when he won the 2011 Rosehill Guineas in his first race in the country ahead of Retrieve and Shamrocker.
He then went on to place sixth in the Australian Derby.
Jimmy Choux’s only two other hit outs on Australian soil came in the $3 million Cox Plate where he finished second to Pinker Pinker and a fourth-place finish in the Emirates Stakes at Flemington.
