Newcastle Newmarket Handicap 2012 Nominations

Next Wednesday, March 21, Sydney will host their own 2012 Newmarket Handicap at Newcastle and a quality list of nominations has now been released for the autumn feature.

The $125,000 Group 3 Newcastle Newmarket Handicap (1400m) has this year drawn 25 early entries with the headline nominee being the Roger James-trained Kiwi He’s Remarkable.

Pentire four-year-old He’s Remarkable hasn’t raced since their controversial loss when regulated to second upon protest behind Luckygray in the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m) at Ascot in Perth last November.

Despite a lengthy and costly appeals process, Cambridge-based horseman James failed to have He’s Remarkable reinstalled as the Railway Stakes winner and as such was denied the Group 1 title.

The horse will be back down under this autumn, however, starting with the Newcastle Newmarket Handicap 2012 on Wednesday.

Won last year by Keepin’ The Dream, the Newcastle Newmarket Handicap is a traditional lead-up race to some of the season’s more lucrative features including the $400,000 Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill Gardens on Easter Saturday April 7, and the $2 million Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) running at Royal Randwick on April 28.

The 2012 Doncaster Mile Handicap is very much in He’s Remarkable’s sights, and they pay $41 in the early odds on the upcoming elite level.

Top-weight for the Newcastle Newmarket Handicap this year is the Chris Waller-trained 2011 Liverpool City Cup winner Triple Elegance with 59kg.

Waller has also nominated for his Red Ransom six-year-old Snow Alert (55.5kg).

This year’s Liverpool City Cup winner Ofcourseican is not nominated for the Newmarket on Wednesday but runner-up Somepin Anypin, four length winner of the Hawkesbury Gold Cup last November, and third placed Fast Clip from the Gai Waterhouse stables have.

Some more in-form Newcastle Newmarket Handicap nominees that have been in good form so far this season include Tony Vasil’s Mossman four-year-old Under The Eiffel, last-start Tattersall’s Members’ Cup winner in Brisbane Steel Zip, recent Rosehill winner over 1500m Star Of Octagonal, Paul Murray’s Canberra National Sprint third placegetter Alma’s Fury and the John Thompson-trained Mr Armstrong.

Other notable 2012 Newcastle Newmarket Handicap nominations include the another Thompson-trained runner Gathering, rising nine-year-old Dao Dao, Brett Partelle’s Queensland Guineas winner Torio’s Quest and recent Tattersalls Club Cup – Gosford Cup double winner Straight Albert.

Guy Walter’s ultra consistent Magic Albert four-year-old Straight Albert is likely to open near the top of the markets if accepted for the Newcastle Newmarket Handicap field having also won the Goulburn Cup over the mile last November.

Acceptances revealing the Newcastle Newmarket Handicap final field for 2012 will be taken on Monday, March 19, and published right here at
