2012 Bunbury Cup Set to be Tight

The bookmakers and punters alike are having a tough time deciding who will win tonight’s $110,000 2012 Bunbury Cup with the four favourites all within $1.50 of each other.

The Listed 2200 metre race is one for the staying horses and it is currently tight in the betting markets between Moonlight Bay ($6.40), Rosie Rocket ($6.80), Peg’s Pride ($7.00) and Battle Emblem ($7.80).

The slight favourite, Moonlight Bay, will need to turn around some recent poor form if she is to take top honours having not finished better than fifth in her last three starts.

The four-year-old mare last ran on March 4 and will come from the inside barrier tonight.

One horse that is coming into the Bunbury Cup in good form is Rosie Rocket who is fresh off a one length win in her last start at Bunbury which came over the stayer’s distance of 2019 metres.

The five-year-old has nine wins from 23 career starts and will again go head to head with long time rival Peg’s Pride.

Peg’s Pride finished second to her nemesis last start and is the feel good story of the 2012 Bunbury Cup.

The six-year-old mare was nearly put down as a youngster when diagnosed as a wobbler and has been nursed by trainer Michael Morton through a career that has acquired seven wins from 31 outings.

Morton said yesterday it is likely she would be retired if successful in tonight’s race due to the amount of weight she would have to carry in future races.

She finished fifth last year after drawing barrier 15 but will be aided by a far better draw this year when she runs from barrier three with Peter Knuckey in the saddle.

Battle Emblem exists as one of three Grant Williams trained horses in the race and the eight-year-old has experience on his side having won nine times from 51 starts.

The gelding won last year’s Pinjarra Cup and finished fourth in the 2011 Bunbury Cup.

Other horses included to run in the Bunbury Cup include Lords Ransom, Guyno and Lovre while Rob Smith trained Mctango (#10) has been scratched.
