2012 Skyline Stakes – Chance to Impress for Slipper Hopefuls

The 2012 Skyline Stakes will take place over 1200 metres as part of Randwick Guineas Day and the sprint provides a host of young colts and geldings a chance to show their wares ahead of next month’s prized Golden Slipper.

Gai Waterhouse trained Raceway is the most prolific of the Skyline runners and currently sits as fourth favourite ($7.50) in the bookmaker.com.au Golden Slipper market.

The More-Than-Ready colt will go in to Saturday’s Group 3 race as favourite but he is not the only Slipper hopeful named to run with the John O’Shea trained Ashokan and Shelford two notable others.

Both horses have been named outside the top 40 in the latest Golden Slipper order of entry and will need to impress over the next three weeks if they are even to make it to the starting line.

O’Shea is not expecting victory on Saturday and will be happy if both can show improvement that will hold them in good stead for the rest of the Slipper lead up.

“We’ll keep heading towards the Golden Slipper irrespective of winning or losing on Saturday,” he said.

Both horses have only had one start to date and both produced second-place efforts.

Ashokan was ridden by Jim Cassidy in February’s Junior Handicap and he will again be in the saddle when the colt runs from barrier eight on Saturday.

Shelford will also have an experienced jockey on top, with Nash Rawiller set to ride him from the second barrier.

Shelford currently sits at $21.00 in the early bookmaker.com.au Golden Slipper market while Ashokan is being offered at $101.00.

Another Slipper hopeful set to run in the Skyline Stakes is the Peter Moody trained Lyric who is currently paying $51.00.
