Randwick City Stakes 2012 Includes Strong International Field

The Listed 2012 Randwick City Stakes (2000m) is the longest race on an action-packed Randwick Guineas Day card and some exciting horses have today been named in the final field.

A real international flavour will be apparent in the $100,000 event with five of the 15 horses set to run having come from overseas.

Headlining the international acts is Irish 2011 Melbourne Cup runner Hawk Island who is the top weight (61kg) and will run from barrier 14 with the experienced Hugh Bowman in the saddle.

Hawk Island

Hawk Island heads a strong field for the Randwick City Stakes

Trained by Chris Waller, the seven-year-old is a bona-fide stayer and has won over the Randwick City Stakes 2000 metre distance seven times.

Waller will be hoping the gelding can turn around a disappointing last start effort where he finished eleventh in the Apollo Stakes at Rosehill.

New Zealand horse Herculian Prince is another strong foreign horse included, having won nine races from 27 starts and collected over $500,000 in prize money.

The Gai Waterhouse trained gelding is coming of a fifth-place finish in last weekend’s Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes.

Two time Group 1 winner Fiumcino looks to be past her best but the New Zealand son of Zabeel has an impressive resume that boasts over $2.8 million in career prize money.

Maules Creek is one of the local hopes and is coming off a respectable third-place finish in Rosehill’s Parramatta Cup on March 3.

Also respectable is the gelding’s career record, having scored three victories from ten career outings.

Mick Price trained five-year-old Platamone Castle has recorded six wins from 16 starts but it will be a step in class in the Listed event with all of those victories coming against lesser quality fields.

Also included in the 2012 Randwick City Stakes final field that was named today are On Every Level, Leica Larrikin and Beijing Boy.
