Doncaster Mile 2012 First Acceptances & Betting Update

First acceptances for the lucrative 2012 Doncaster Mile Handicap have this week been released by Racing New South Wales with the connections of 87 gallopers paying the fee to keep their horses in connection for the April 21 feature.

Manawanui is now the 2012 Doncaster Mile co-favourite following first acceptances

The number of hopefuls heading towards the $2 million Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m), one of the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival’s richest races, was cut from 202 at late entry state to the 87.

Some of the more notable defectors from the event that will not be there in the Doncaster Mile field include Gai Waterhouse’s Caulfield Stakes winner Descarado, the Michael Moroney-trained Glass Harmonium after their Australian Cup seventh, Joe Pride’s exciting runner Rain Affair who failed to finish better than sixth in their first Group 1 assignment in the Newmarket Handicap last Saturday and the last year’s Doncaster Mile winner Sacred Choice who has now been retired.

Mark Kavanagh’s Thousand Guineas winning filly Atlantic Jewel, who is approximately three weeks off a much awaited race return, remains the early favourite following first acceptances in the Doncaster Mile odds at

Atlantic Jewel, however, now shares her $6.50 spot at the top of the markets with fellow three-year-old, Ron Leemon’s reigning Golden Rose hero Manawanui.

Manawanui has their next start this Saturday in the $500,000 Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) where he will take on last-start Australian Guineas conqueror and fellow Doncaster Mile first acceptor Mosheen.

Other early favourites in the Doncaster Mile betting markets that are still in contention include:

  • Shoot Out ($10 – Chris Waller’s recent acquisition ran off with a two length win last start in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m), their first win since August 2010 and they don’t look like stopping
  • Mosheen ($13 – Star Crown Oaks – Australian Guineas winning filly from Robert Smerdon’s stables, has a brilliant mile over the record but how she will go in Sydney will be decided in the Randwick Guineas this Saturday
  • Secret Admirer ($13 – Winner of the Epsom Handicap over the Randwick mile last October, should relish getting back to this distance
  • Streama ($15 – Ultra-consistent Stratum filly, winner of the Group 1 Flight Stakes at Randwick over 1600-metres during the spring, back in form last start with a Surround Stakes victory

The final acceptances revealing the 2012 Doncaster Mile field will be taken on Tuesday April 17 and published right here at
