ATC Australian Oaks 2012 Nominations

Nominations for a number of the upcoming Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival elite levels have been taken this week including those for the fillies’ classic, the 2012 ATC Australian Oaks.

Mosheen

Mosheen could attempt the Australian Guineas - Australian Oaks 2012 double this autumn having already won the first leg

Set to run as one of the key support races on the Doncaster Mile Day program at Royal Randwick on Saturday April 21, the $550,000 Group 1 ATC Oaks (2400m) has this year attracted 64 three-year-old fillies at nomination stage.

The highest rated and sure to be favourite in the Australian Oaks odds at bookmaker.com.au of those fillies is Robert Smerdon’s Crown Oaks – Australian Guineas champion Mosheen.

After her historical win in the Australian Guineas over the Flemington mile on March 3, Mosheen will take on the boys again this Saturday when she faces Manawanui in the $500,000 Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m).

It will be her first look at a Sydney track since her second to Sepoy in the Golden Slipper nearly 12 months ago, and her first look at Royal Randwick home also to the Australian Oaks.

The other big name ATC Australian Oaks 2012 entries are then Streama and Silent Achiever.

Guy Walter’s in-form Stratum filly Streama, winner of the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) at Randwick last October, turned the tables on her first-up conqueror Sea Siren when she beat them home second-up last weekend in the Group 2 Surround Stakes (1400m) at Warwick Farm.

As for the Roger James-trained O’Reilly filly Silent Achiever, this boom Kiwi youngster has won four straight back home this summer, all at Group level, including her easy two and a half length win in the Group 1 New Zealand Derby (2400m) at Ellerslie on March 3.

The remainder of the ATC Oaks nominees are yet to reach the same heights as the top trio with some of the better fillies likely to appear Royal Randwick a week earlier for the $1.5 million Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m) on April 14.

One lightly-raced filly that has huge potential and who will be given their chance in the ATC Oaks is Anthony Cummings’ progressive daughter of Captain Rio, She Goes To Rio.

She Goes To Rio scored her fourth career win form five starts last Sunday when she beat home the Peter Snowden-trained race favourite Detours in the Listed Canberra Guineas (1400m).

Other noteworthy ATC Australian Oaks entries include Bart Cummings’ Group 2 Kewney Stakes winner from last Saturday Empress Rock, Kewney Stakes third placegetter Bliss Street, Surround Stakes fourth placed Appearance who is a stablemate to Streama, the Peter Snowden-trained Euryale and last-start Gosford winning Snitzel filly Aliyana Tilde.

Late entries for the Patinack Farm Australian Oaks will close on Tuesday April 17 followed by final acceptances and the release of the 2012 ATC Oaks field on Wednesday April 18.
