James McDonald will be hoping for a quick return...
Promising Mick Price trained colt Proliferate has been included in the nominations for the 2012 Alister Clark Stakes which will be used as a stop on the road to the Australian Derby.
The Alister Clark Stakes is a $200,000 Group 2 (2040m) stayer’s event that will take place at Moonee Valley this Friday March 16.
Price said it serves as a good opportunity for Proliferate to get his Autumn campaigin back on track after finishing seventh in the Australian Guineas.
He admitted that sticking to a stayer’s schedule would have been more beneficial for the son of More Than Ready and the Australian Guineas run was potentially detrimental to his chances on Friday.
“He’s a stayer and last start he should have run over 1800 [metres], then in the Alister Clark instead of trying to win a Group One mile [1600m Australian Guineas] which came unstuck,” Price said.
“Going from a mile to 2040 metres on Friday night may catch me short with him but with a view to where we should be going it is the right race.”
Proliferate has recorded three victories from five careers starts, with his last race being the Australian Guineas, but Price believes the talented three-year-old will head in to Friday’s race fresh.
“It is 13 days between runs coming from a mile but I’m happy with him and he’s a clean winded horse,” he said.
New Zealand horse Sangster will also be looking to turn around a disappointing Australian Guineas result where the gelding finished 15th.
The Trent Busuttin trained son of Savabeel has three victories from ten starts including the 2011 Group 1 Victoria Derby over 2500 metres.
Highly Recommended, who finished fifth in the Australian Guineas, has also been nominated to run but the distance will be a test for the Fastnet Rock colt who is yet to race over more than 1600 metres.
Michael Moroney trained Sabrage has two wins from eight starts and is no stranger to distance having won the 2000 metre Norman Robinson Stakes (2000m) and also finished third in the 2011 Victoria Derby (2500m).
Third placed Australian Guineas finisher Mr Milton has also been included in nominations.
