Fill The Page Wins 2012 Canberra Cup – Results

Saluting for the locals on Sunday, mother and son training team Barbara Joseph and Paul Jones’ smart four-year-old mare Fill The Page saluted in the Canberra Cup 2012 in a tight upset.

After the opening two black-types of the day were won by Sydneysiders, Anthony CummingsShe Goes To Rio taking out the Canberra Guineas and then the Peter Snowden-trained 2012 Golden Slipper chance Epaulette winning the Black Opal Stakes, Fill The Page finally kept one at home in the $200,000 Listed Canberra Cup (2000m).

A $21 chance in the Canberra Cup betting markets, the daughter of Dane Shadow improved tremendously on her last-start seventh at Rosehill to hit the line a long neck ahead of the Bede Murray-trained World Wide ($9) with Coliseo ($9) a further half length away in third.

Barbara Joseph said that after years of trying a Canberra Cup victory, especially by such a well-loved mare, was one of the highlights of her 18-years of training in the nation’s capital.

“I’ve run third in the Cup a couple of times so it’s great to finally win one today,” she said on Sunday after Fill The Page kept the Canberra Cup in Canberra for the third time in as many years following back-to-back victories from Macknuckle.

“I was sitting up in the grandstand before the race thinking she was a four-year-old mare on the way up against some of these older horses, and I’ve seen it before in races like the Caulfield Cup that the mares that are on the up are the ones to beat.

“This is fantastic.”

After handling the 2000-metres despite some earlier worries, Fill The Page will drop back in distance slightly for her next assignment as she seeks some Sydney black-type in the $100,000 Listed Epona Stakes (1900m) at Rosehill Gardens on March 26.

Meanwhile, the final race on the Canberra card for Sunday was won by the Guy Walter-trained Hood who beat home Fill The Page’s stablemate Onthelookout by one and three quarter lengths in the $100,000 Listed National Sprint (1400m) with Paul Murray’s $4.40 favourite Alma’s Fury a close third.
